Giant Eagle to End foodperks! Program

The last day to earn the perks will be Feb. 13.

Giant Eagle's popular foodperks! program will end on May 31, according to an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, but the last day to earn the perks will be much sooner—Feb. 13. The supermarket/gas station chain's fuelperks! program, however, will continue, the P-G reports. In fact, starting on Thursday, it will be supplemented by a 3-cent discount on gasoline for Advantage Card holders on the occasions when they don't use fuelperks! Giant Eagle CEO Laura Karet said that the foodperks! program had become "a little too complex." Giant Eagle has local stores in Edgewood Towne Centre and Braddock Hills Shopping Center. Local GetGos are in Regent Square and Wilkinsburg. Read the Post-Gazette's full report here. _______________________ …

Fate of Ardmore Boulevard Office Building Up in Air Again

The 102-year-old building had no bidders at a sheriff‘s sale this week, so the mortgage holder has taken the foreclosed property.

The vacant 102-year-old office building at the corner of Ardmore Boulevard and Braddock Road in Forest Hills had no bidders at an Allegheny County Sheriff's sale this week. Just last summer, Giant Eagle wanted as a site for a GetGo gas station but the supermarket chain was unable to secure enough property to make that happen after Forest Hills Presbyterian Church members voted against selling a portion of the church property needed to make that happen. With no one interested in bidding on the building, the mortgage holder, Verona-based Engineered Products Inc., took the foreclosed property, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The Trib reports that EPI will likely sell the building, but first would have to pay about $30,000 in …

Forest Hills Presby Says GetGo Sale is a No Go

The church considered selling a portion of its parking lot to Giant Eagle, but one vote stopped the sale.

Forest Hills Presbyterian Church last week declined a gas station’s $200,000 offer for a portion of its parking lot, bringing an end to a debate the pastor described as “heated.” The Rev. Ben Black, the church’s pastor, said Giant Eagle representatives were looking to buy roughly 70 feet of the church’s parking lot to use for a GetGo gas station and convenience store the company wanted to build at the corner of Ardmore Boulevard and Braddock Road. The sale failed by one vote. The congregation, needing a two-thirds majority to approve the sale, voted 39-21 in favor on Sunday, Aug. 5. “It was very close, very heated,” Black said, adding that he tried to maintain neutrality. “Whether it sold or didn’t sell, I was more concerned about the …

Congrats to Forest Hills Presbyterian Church for not letting "money talk." The neighborhood surrounding that area would definitely have been adversely affected by a GetGo -too much light, too much traffic, too much litter & too much noise - way out of line for a residential neighborhood. It looked very quiet there at 3 p.m. No opening day event of any kind. They appear to be offering (in addition to fuel) tobacco products, soda, snacks, propane, and full-service PA lottery.   more ›

Community Forum: Sale of Sunoco

The Sunoco station is being sold and currently is in talks with Giant Eagle.

The pending sale of Dave's Gerenyi's Sunoco gas station in Regent Square will bring about a major change in the neighborhood. While Gerenyi is in talks with Giant Eagle to bring in a GetGo gas station to fill the space, details have yet to be revealed and the sale is not yet final. "To me, it's not final until we sit down and sign everything," Gerenyi said. The Regent Square Civic Association recently sent a letter to Edgewood Council, the borough in which the gas station is located. "Although many of the neighbors and board members are saddened at the loss of this valuable business, we understand that the sale is an inevitable part of change that happens to all communities," the letter states. "However, because of the strategic location …
