Stock Up on Books—C.C. Mellor Library's Sale Begins Friday

Need some more books to read? Stop by the book sale Friday through Tuesday.

If you're running low on reading material, head over to the C.C. Mellor Memorial Library's annual Book Sale this weekend. The sale begins today, March 22, and will run through through Tuesday, March 26 in the ballroom of the Edgewood Community House, 1 Pennwood Ave. Readers of all ages and interests have thousands of items to choose from—books, movies, books on tape and CD, music CDs and tapes, magazines, and children’s games. Everything is at bargain prices and proceeds benefit the library. The event kicks off Friday with a Preview Party for area residents and their guests from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. C.C. Mellor Library's Annual Book Sale Set March 22-26

WPSD Offers American Sign Language Classes This Spring

An eight-week, non-credit course will be offered on the Edgewood campus.

The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf will offer a spring session of American Sign Language classes on the school's Edgewood campus, 300 East Swissvale Ave. The eight-week, non-credit courses meet every Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Three levels of ASL will be taught. The classes not only teach signing skills, but also promote a greater understanding of deaf culture through interaction with deaf and hard of hearing people. The fee for the session is $60 and is due with registration. Information and registration forms are available on the website at wpsd.org. 'Rich Blocks, Poor Blocks' Map lets you see the median income for your neighborhood in Forest Hills, Swissvale, Edgewood, Wilkinsburg and surrounding communities.

An interactive map at the Rich Blocks, Poor Blocks website offers a glimpse at median household incomes, by neighborhoods, in the Forest Hills-Regent Square area—or anywhere in the country. Take, for instance, the Swissvale neighborhood between the South Braddock Avenue business district and Frick Park. The number shows a median household income of $80,781. Yet the neighborhood between McClure Street, the East Busway and Rankin has a median household income of $25,313. In comparison, the statewide middle-class income range is $44,750 and $54,425. Missing Bridgeville Man Found in Edgewood Died of Hypothermia

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said hypertensive cardiovascular disease contributed to 81-year-old Laurie McDonald's death.

Laurie McDonald, the 81-year-old elderly Bridgeville man who went missing Thursday in Wilkinsburg, died of hypothermia and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said Wednesday afternoon. McDonald was found dead Sunday afternoon over an embankment in a wooded area near the Edgewood Borough dump, located alongside the Parkway East, according to Edgewood police. Allegheny County Homicide Unit and the medical examiner's office responded to the scene Sunday. Bridgeville police Chief Chad King said McDonald left for a doctor’s appointment in Homewood on Thursday and apparently got lost on his way home. Missing Bridgeville Man Found Dead in Edgewood

Laurie "Larry" McDonald, the Bridgeville man who went missing Thursday night, was found Sunday afternoon in a wooded area.

The missing Bridgeville man who vanished Thursday night has been found dead in Edgewood, according to authorities. The body of Laurie “Larry” McDonald, 81, was found in a wooded area not far from the Parkway East, Bridgeville police Chief Chad King said. WPXI-TV reported McDonald’s body was found around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. King said McDonald left for a doctor’s appointment in Homewood on Thursday and apparently got lost on his way home. He somehow ended up on an access road, King said, and either crashed his car or got stuck in the mud. McDonald then called his wife around 9 p.m. Thursday to say he saw a gas station and planned to walk through a wooded area to get assistance. Wilkinsburg police found the car around 9:30 p.m. and had it towed…
