County officials unveiled the first two compressed natural gas trucks put into service for their public works department at an Earth Day press conference on Monday.
To most Forest Hills, Regent Square, Edgewood, Swissvale and Wilkinsburg residents, the new, white Allegheny County trucks that they might pass on the roadways won't appear to be anything extraordinary. But they are a first step in the county going green with a cleaner-burning fuel for fleet vehicles. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and other officials unveiled the county's first two compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles at a press conference on Monday. Each vehicle cost $35,285. The Silverado 2500HD, four-wheel drive, extended cab pickup trucks contain specially designed 6.0-litre Vortec V8 engines and have a gross vehicle weight of 9,500 pounds. Located at the Century III Mall, the Project Prom Shop will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 23. The one-day extension was added from the original close date of March 16 due to popular demand. Pennsylvania residents who wish to vote in the upcoming May 21 primary elections must be registered by Monday, April 22. Registered voters who have moved or changed their names or party affiliations must also notify their counties' elections divisions of their changes by April 22. An individual must be registered in a political party in order to vote in that party's primary. The pilot foreclosure prevention program is open to Allegheny County homeowners with Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) mortgages.
Allegheny County, partnering with the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, have launched a pilot program to assist low-income homeowners with energy-efficiency improvements that could help cut down on utility bills. The pilot "Energy Efficiency Foreclosure Prevention Initiative" program was created through a partnership with PHFA,ACTION-Housing and four utility companies: Columbia Gas, Duquesne Light, Equitable Gas and Peoples Natural Gas. The program will provide $1 million in energy-efficient improvement services to at least 200 Allegheny County homeowners with PHFA mortgages who meet income guidelines. Property owners in the Forest Hills-Regent Square Patch area have another chance to challenge their new assessments, but time is running out. County Executive Rich Fitzgerald signed legislation that allows property owners, and taxing bodies, to appeal new real estate values. Allegheny County is home to more than 23,000 federal employees and retirees who contribute to its economy and potentially could be affected if sequestration budget cuts are enacted today. The numbers shown here reflect the number of federal employees in each Pennsylvania by county in 2012, according to the latest figures from Eye on Washington, a DC-based lobbying firm that tracks federal employment. It compiles the data from the Office of Personnel Management, Federal Employment Statistics and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. County Controller Chelsa Wagner said Thursday the amount could be about $50 for the average household.
An analysis by Allegheny County Controller Chelsa Wagner has revealed that the county could be on track to overcharge the average household by $50 in property taxes in 2013. “There is a strong possibility, from the data we have analyzed, that the county is on track to gain a windfall of as much as $38 million," Wagner said in a statement issued on Thursday. “I am calling on the administration to publicize every detail of their millage calculation to assure all taxpayers that no windfall will occur. Allegheny County Medical Examiner Karl Williams said this is the first time on record that there have been more murders in the county's suburbs outside Pittsburgh than within the city's borders.
Wilkinsburg had 12 homicides in 2012, the highest number in a single municipality outside the City of Pittsburgh. KDKA-TV reports there were 96 homicides in Allegheny County in 2012, 42 of which occurred in City of Pittsburgh—compared to 54 in suburban Allegheny County. Law enforcement officials say that's a sign that criminal elements are moving into untapped regions. Homicides in the county were up 32 percent over 2011, according to WTAE-TV.
