Early Bird Workouts a Stress Buster Before the Day Begins

Never thought you could work out at 6 a.m.? You might surprise yourself!

I never thought I’d be the type to wake up at 5:30 a.m., lace up my shoes and get my work out on. But I actually have finally become that person. And, surprisingly, I couldn’t be happier! Before I started my early morning work out routines, I thought it’d be a pain to get out of bed. Yes, it’s hard to roll out of bed when the alarm goes off so early, but as soon as my feet hit the floor, I’m ready to go. One local option for an early bird work out occurs every Monday and Wednesday at 6 a.m. at the Wilkins School Community Center in Regent Square. Led by Ebony Pearson, this core group of diverse women ranging in age from 20s to 50s complete a range of exercises. Stations that include weights, squats, jump rope and other options are timed by…

'Chicago Steppin'' Offers Neighborhood Fun

This local group knows how to dance.

Chicago Steppin’ is an evolution of dance from the ‘20s currently being explored during group sessions at the Wilkins School Community Center in Regent Square. Karen Gist of Penn Hills said she got started a few years ago and has been hooked ever since. “It started out with swing and bop and has grown into a type of ballroom dance,” Gist said. “It’s called Chicago stepping because it started out there, and over time, people in other places picked it up and made it their own.” Chicago steppin’ is a partner dance focused on eight counts. There are eight steps and counts with various moves and turns similar to the salsa. The music is a contemporary, jazz-based style. Trios dance together as well. The local group meets from 7 to 9 p.m. every …

Steel City Ukuleles Inspire Community, Musical Gatherings

This group meets twice a month at the Wilkins School Community Center.

After enjoying a session of the Steel City Ukuleles musical gathering, founder Marlene Parrish said if you don’t walk away smiling, you don’t have a pulse. “We are so glad to see each other and just hate to leave, and usually by the end, people are sitting there jamming,” Parrish said. The group formed last June and meets from 7 to 9 p.m. every first and third Wednesday of the month at the Wilkins School Community Center. While the core group has about 15 members, Parrish said they are looking for new people interested in this miniature musical instrument. “It’s just a bunch of people committed to playing the ukulele and singing for fun,” Parrish said. “We have a template for teaching and a whole list of songs. We take three or four easier…
