Primary Election Guide: Candidates for Forest Hills-Regent Square Area Races

This year's primary election will be May 21. Take a look at who filed to be on the ballot.

There are several government seats—council, school board, mayoral—up for grabs this year in Forest Hills, Regent Square, Edgewood, Swissvale and the Woodland Hills School District. This year's primary election is on May 21. Republicans and Democrats are seeking their party's nomination to appear in the general election ballot in November. Here's a look at who filed to run in local races. Mayor—Incumbent Marty B. O’Malley, a Democrat, is running unopposed. Tax Collector—Incumbent Janet Yuros Sullivan, a Democrat, is running unopposed. Street Sweeping in Edgewood, Swissvale Begins Monday

Make sure your car is parked on the right side of the road.

Street-sweeping season begins in Edgewood and Swissvale this week! Weather permitting, street sweeping in both boroughs will start on April 1. Residents are asked to check the signs posted their street for the schedule for sweeping. Easter Services Scheduled in Forest Hills-Regent Square Area

Here's a roundup of some Easter services at local churches.

Churches in the Forest Hills-Regent Square area are hosting Easter services. Here's a roundup: Forest Hills Christ Lutheran Church—A Good Friday Tenebrae Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, there will be a children's Easter event from 9:45 a.m. to noon. On Easter, there will be a sunrise service at 6 a.m., breakfast at 7 a.m., and Divine Services at 8:15 and 11 a.m. Forest Hills Presbyterian Church—The church will hold a worship service on Easter morning at 10:30. Hope Lutheran Church—A Good Friday Taize Prayer will be held at 7 p.m. and a Tenebrae Service at 8 p.m. An Easter service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday with breakfast following. Remember to enjoy these upcoming Easter Egg Hunts in the Forest Hills-Regent Square area: Forest Hills—Christ Lutheran Church and School in Forest Hills will host a children's Easter event on Saturday, March 30, from 9:45 a.m. to noon. Regent Square—The Regent Square Civic Association's egg hunt will be held on Saturday, March 30, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the parklet on Sanders Avenue and Richmond Street. Children ages 8 and younger are invited to hunt for candy and prize-filled eggs. Small bags to hold eggs will be provided and other fun activities are planned. Edgewood Police Reports: Theft and Retail Theft

Here's the Edgewood police blotter for March 14 to March 21.

The following incidents were reported to the Edgewood Police Department. Information was obtained from call logs and police reports. Theft An East End Avenue reported a broken passenger side window on their vehicle on March 15. About $1 in change was stolen from the glove compartment. Assist Edgewood police assisted the Swissvale Police Department with a disturbance at Murrays Cafe on Noble Street. Swissvale Man Held for Court on Rape Charges

Allegheny County police have charged a 19-year-old with rape.

A 19-year-old Swissvale resident will face rape charges in Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. Allegheny County police have charged Russell Jeremy Valdez with rape and sexual assault after a Jan. 6 incident. A preliminary hearing before Forest Hills District Justice Thomas Caulfield was scheduled for March 20, and he was held for court. Valdez is accused of sexually assaulting and raping an acquaintance at a Monongahela Avenue residence. Valdez is being held at the Allegheny County Jail. Bail is set at $100,000. Winter Storm Warning: Several Inches of Snow Predicted for Forest Hills-Regent Square Area

The snow is expected to start Sunday night.

Though it's officially spring, it seems as though the Forest Hills-Regent Square area will experience some more winter weather. The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the entire Pittsburgh region, including Forest Hills, Regent Square, Edgewood and Swissvale. The warning is in effect from 11 p.m. Sunday through 11 a.m. Monday. Snow is expected to be most intense from midnight Sunday through the pre-dawn hours of Monday, accumulating 4 to 7 inches before ending by Monday afternoon. Heavy snow could make traveling hazardous.
