The closure planned for this weekend, March 22-25, on the Squirrel Hill Tunnel has been canceled due to expected inclement weather, according to PennDOT. The tunnel will remain open in both directions this weekend. Single lane closures in each direction will continue Friday evening into Saturday morning. Future tunnel closures will be rescheduled at a later date.

PennDOT issues a warning to drivers.
PennDOT will close the outbound Squrirrel Hill Tunnel this weekend, March 22-25. "Significant delays should be expected and alternate routes considered," according to a PennDOT press release. The closure begins at 11 p.m. Friday and will last until 6 a.m. Monday. A posted detour will require traffic to form a single lane exiting the Squirrel Hill/Homestead exit. The inbound tunnel will remain open, although short-term traffic stoppages may occur for equipment access and material removal. To minimize impacts on Squirrel Hill businesses, which will remain open and accessible, different detours are being used during day and night hours. Outbound ceiling removal begins.
Single direction weekend closures of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East will resume in late March. Both directions will not be closed simultaneously, according to PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi. The first closure is planned in the outbound (eastbound) tunnel during the weekend of March 22-25 from 11 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday. Crews will begin work to remove the outbound tunnel ceiling, and continue rehabilitation and preservation work on the outbound bridge over Commercial Street. When overall work is completed, vertical clearance in the eastbound tunnel will increase from 13 feet, 6 inches to 14 feet, 9 inches. A Pittsburgh man who led police on a high-speed chase along the Parkway East and Boulevard of the Allies appeared before District Judge Thomas Caulfield in his Forest Hills courtroom Jan. 30. Juan Hernandez Carrera, 45, of Pittsburgh was held for court on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude officers, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest/other law enforcement, failure to stop at a red signal, disregard traffic lane (single), turning movement and required signals, driving at safe speed, careless driving and reckless driving. Short-term single lane closures on the westbound (inbound) Parkway East will occur on Saturday and Sunday mornings, Jan. 12 and 13, weather permitting. Crews will be inspecting the bridge that carries I-376 over Commercial Street between the Edgewood-Swissvale interchange and the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, according to PennDOT District 11 spokesman Jim Struzzi. As a courtesy to motorists and travelers, traffic restrictions related to the rehabilitation project were postponed over the holiday season. Overnight single-lane traffic in the outbound (eastbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East (I-376) will begin on Wednesday night, Nov. 28. Single-lane traffic will occur in the outbound tunnel according to the following schedule through Dec. 11: According to PennDOT, crews will be conducting rehabilitation work in the tunnel and improvements to the Commercial Avenue Bridge. Motorists are advised to use caution and allow extra time when traveling through the area. The work is part of the $49.5 million Squirrel Hill Tunnel rehabilitation project. In January, engineers will begin evaluating the entire Parkway East corridor and its adjoining network of roads for alternate improvements.
PennDOT has abandoned its plans to design and build metered ramps and use traffic signals to help with congestion leading from the Parkway East to the Squirrel Hill Tunnel. The Post-Gazette reported Wednesday that PennDOT has chosen not to pursue a $5 million plan to design and build a ramp-metering system after a study commissioned from the University of Pittsburgh concluded a combination of ramp closures and traffic signals could help relieve congestion. Dan Cessna, executive for PennDOT District 11, told the Post-Gazette that engineers will begin evaluating the entire Parkway East corridor and its adjoining network of roads in January.
