Random Violence, Steady Support for Attack Victim

After being attacked in the Strip District, a Regent Square man was left with a fractured jaw, loose teeth, astronomical bills—and a throng of neighbors lending their help.

When William Reed Wingo went out one Saturday, he figured on it being a wild night—“wild” by his standards, anyway. He finished work (he’s the catering manager at Square Café in Regent Square), went for a six-mile run (he’s also the founder of the Square Run Club), and headed to the Strip District to go dancing. “A wild Saturday night for me is dancing at 11 and being home by 1 and in bed,” Wingo said. The night got crazier than he anticipated—before it even began. According to Wingo, he was walking along Smallman Street past the Heinz History Center around 11 p.m. A group of five men were in front of him. One turned around and “sucker-punched” him in the face, Wingo said, knocking his head back into a wall. Wingo heard his jaw crack, then…

But the story is about William, and the incredible support he IS getting. And let's not lose sight of that. A terrific community, a supportive network of friends, and a great place to work may be the best insurance one can have.   more ›

Square Runner is Recovering after Attack—What Can We Do to Help?

William Reed Wingo is someone most of us call a friend. Let's give him some extra love right now.

Some people are just those kinds of people who step up and make a community exactly what it is. They just get it. They have heart and soul and go above and beyond being a nameless face in the crowd. William Reed Wingo, the founder of the Square Running Club and catering manager at Square Cafe, is that person. I was outraged and saddened after opening my computer yesterday, logging on to Facebook to find out that William was attacked this past weekend on his way to a club in the Strip District. After being punched and beat up, William ran as fast as he could to get away. If you know William, you know how kind he is and the fact that he would never do anything to hurt another human being. William is now suffering from a fractured jaw and …

Square Runners: Heather's Story

One member of the local club shares her love of running.

By Heather Adams Let me be honest: I’ve never liked running. I’ve never been a strong runner and have always cursed my short legs for making me work twice as hard at it. I’ve always been an active person, though. I ran my first 5k in the sixth grade, constantly ran for high school sports, and would put 50 to 60 miserable miles on my feet every week for crew in college. While training during my second season as a Division I NCAA athlete, I sustained a few minor injuries that, when combined, marked the end of my collegiate career as a rower. It was so bad that on most mornings when I got out of bed my legs would just collapse under me. If I couldn't train, I couldn’t be on the team, and that hurt. I’d lost my identity as an athlete. I got …

From a 14min to a 8.5min mile. Wow, this is going on my wall of encouragement. I hate running, but I know I need to get better at it. If not just the health benefits, but for the speed in any races I do. I wish I were back in the Pgh to come run with you guys.   more ›

Square Runners: Honoring The Founder

The club recently held a party for William Reed Wingo, who started Square Runners.

By Edward May It was a dark and stormy night...No really, it was.  Thursday night was mild, but windy and unpredictably rainy. With only a week until Winter Solstice, 7 p.m. was dark as well. Nonetheless, it was Thursday and that meant just one thing—running with the Square Runners. Since early  October, my wife Brenda, and I have jogged to the Square Cafe each Thursday evening to join in a weekly group run. The group is eclectic, much like the driving force behind the Square Runners, William Reed Wingo. At about 6’ with short reddish hair and an intense gaze, William has anchored the running group at the Square Cafe, where he works. This Thursday night was special because this was William’s last Thursday night run. So, a small but core …

Square Runners: Cold Weather Running

Check out the latest from the Regent Square fitness group.

By John Pilecki THE GOOD NEWS: The Square Running Club has supplemented its established 7 p.m. Thursday evening runs with Tuesday and Wednesday morning runs at two different times: 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. We hope this accommodates different morning schedules. All runs start at Square Café on South Braddock Avenue.  THE NOT-SO-GOOD NEWS: Gone is the balmy August weather we had at the club’s inception. Even moderate late autumn morning temperatures require more covering than a singlet and running shorts provide, and soon the temps will be near or below freezing in the predawn hours. But not to fret—two club members have experienced continuing their running routines through Pittsburgh winters, and are sharing their hard-earned cold weather …

Square Runners: The Playlist

Some club members share their favorite songs that motivate them to keep going!

By John Pilecki Ever see a runner on the side of the road whose energy (and blissful smile) seems to flow from the pair of earbuds in his or her ears? Ever wonder what tune is providing this sonic fuel? Square Running Club member Jackie Jones was inspired during a recent run to present this question to other club members: What is your favorite running song? In typical fashion, S.R.C. members were eager to share their thoughts: Heather Adams: I listen to "A Day to Remember." Their music is pumped–up melodic metal with messages about thinking you can’t do things, and then doing them with a good beat. Mala Shah: It isn’t super fast, but it is still awesome: Mandela by Chris Berry.  Todd Hryckowian: I like the old Clash tune, Rudy Don’t Fail…
