From Diamonds, Rings, Rinks and Links, Authors Pick 'The Steel City 500'

Chris Fletcher of Forest Hills and David Finoli of Monroeville release their new book featuring 500 of the best athletes to come from or play in western PA.

Mario Lemieux, Bill Mazeroski, Lynn Swann—all names familiar to Pittsburgh sports fans and even those who only casually follow sports. But who are Cool Papa Bell, Louise Fulton, Susan Regan and Danny Seemiller? They, too, have made the list of western Pennsylvania's top 500 athletes of all time—as compiled by Chris Fletcher and David Finoli in their just-released book, "The Steel City 500." The book took seven years from conception to print. Since their college days at Duquesne University, sports have been big part of the friendship between Fletcher, a former editor and publisher of Pittsburgh Magazine from Forest Hills, and Finoli, a Monroeville resident, who has been in retail management for 28 years, most recently as personnel manager …

News Nearby: Soccer Star Meghan Klingenberg Named Alternate to U.S. Olympic Team

The Pine-Richland graduate is one of four alternates for an elite team.

Soccer star Meghan Klingenberg is a step away from her Olympic dream. She has been named an alternate on the U.S. women's soccer team that will play in the London Olympics. The 2007 Pine-Richland High School graduate is in very elite company. Of the 18 players who made the team, 11 are returning from the U.S. team that won the gold medal in 2008 in Beijing, China. U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Pia Sundhage named Klingenberg and three others as alternates. The U.S. Women’s National Team has advanced to the gold medal game of every Olympic women’s soccer tournament that has been contested, according to ussoccer.com. Registration is due June 13.

Forest Hills Borough is calling for all boys and girls ages seven to 15 who are interested in receiving instructions in the fundamentals of basketball skills which will include developmental drills and games. PA East West All-Star Football Game Benefits Children's Hospitals

The game will be held Sunday, May 6, at Gateway High School in Monroeville.

Talented high school students from throughout the state will be competing in a football game to raise money for children's hospitals. The 2012 Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association (PFSCA) East West All-Star Game will be held Sunday, May 6, at 2 p.m. at Gateway High School's Antimarino Stadium in Monroeville. The school is at 5000 Gateway Campus Boulevard. The cost is $7, and tickets are available at the gate. The game, once an annual tradition, has been reinstituted to help recognize talented young high school football players from across Pennsylvania. Frick Park Tennis Courts Block Party Friday

All Regent Square residents are welcome to stop by the Frick Park Red Clay Tennis Courts for the Annual Opening Block Party to be held Friday from 5 p.m. to dusk.   There will be drinks and snacks, music with D.J. Turnstyles, as well as tennis clinics and games for both adults and children. The courts are located on South Braddock Avenue at Frick Park.   Both tennis players and non-players are welcomed to stop and enjoy the activities. UPDATED: WH Basketball Player States he was Provoked

The basketball team faced trouble at Saturday's game.

Shakim Alonzo spoke to the McKeesport Daily News and said he was provoked at a game Saturday night just before he punched a player from Peters Township. "There was a lot that happened, but there was a bunch of racial slurs and a bunch of contact that had nothing to do with basketball going on," the report states. Alonzo is a Woodland Hills student and member of the basketball team. According to the McKeesport Daily News, Alonzo was ejected from the game. The incident is being investigated. Peters Township coach stated the incident was not racial in any way. Regent Square's John Wray Heads to 54th Straight Pirates Opener

This dedicated Pirates fan has attended every Pirates opener since 1958 - and he's always eager to talk baseball.

John Wray is one of Pittsburgh’s most dedicated baseball fans and today, he’ll be at the Pirates home opener—for the 54th consecutive year. Wray was born in Wilkinsburg in 1951 before moving to the Regent Square home he still lives in today at the age of 5. One year later, he attended opening day of the 1958 season at Forbes Field. He hasn’t missed an opener since. “It’s an event for me now,” Wray said. “I get really excited at games. It really makes it a fun occasion.” Wray’s status as a lifelong Pirates fan was cemented in his early teenage years when his older sister became friendly with Roberto Clemente after a chance meeting outside of Forbes Field.
