Woodland Hills Looking at Themed Elementary Schools for 2014-15

Part 2 of a four-part series on Woodland Hills' 'Long-Range Plan for Excellence.'

When Woodland Hills School District's ad hoc committee came up with a list of long-range planning recommendations, one was to find a way to replicate the success of the Woodland Hills Academy in the district's other schools. As the district looks at consolidating from six to four elementary schools for the 2014-15 school year, Substitute Superintendent Alan Johnson said that the plan would be to create themed academies at each of the remaining buildings. "I believe students will start coming back to us if we do this," Johnson said. The district proposes closing Fairless Elementary next school year and then turning it into a "Family Service Centre" to provide a one-stop shop for social services for families of infants, todders and …

I think this is the most ridiculous idea I have ever heard. I have a child at Shffer now. If they close Shaffer, I will pull my child from the district and place them in a private school.   more ›

Woodland Hills: Close 3 Schools, Create Academies and Family Center

Deputy Supt. Alan Johnson unveiled the district's proposed long-range plans to officials from the 12 member municipalities.

Woodland Hills School District is considering major changes over the next two school years to save money, woo students back to the public schools and potentially save itself from financial ruin. At a special community meeting Tuesday night at the high school, Substitute Superintendent Alan Johnson shared those plans with about 40 elected and appointed officials who came from the 12 municipalities that make up the district. The district projects that it could save $2-3 million a year by closing three elementary schools, moving seventh-graders to a separate building close to the high school and bringing eighth-graders into the high school building. (See a four-part Patch series beginning today that discusses these plans in depth.) The …

Busing 'Error' Hits WHSD Pre-Kindergartner and Family

Building permit, class size and property assessment among other items discussed by Woodland Hills School Board.

Tammy Warfield thought everything was in place for the first day of school last week when she put her daughter on the Woodland Hills school bus and watched her ride off to pre-kindergarten. She registered her daughter for transportation last month, noting on her registration form that her 5-year-old wasn’t going to kindergarten, but to pre-kindergarten. The district transportation secretary accepted her registration form and Warfield thought she was good. At around 11:20 a.m. on the first day of school, the district called Warfield at her workplace in Moon Township to let her know her daughter would not be able to ride the bus this year. Pre-kindergarten students aren’t allowed to ride the bus. “Yep, there was an error,” said Jerry …

My daughter was in Pre-K at Edgewood two years ago and it was made perfectly clear through paperwork and orientation that transportation was NOT provided for that age group. Also, children were to be dropped off and picked up at a side door of the building by a parent or guardian separate from the other grades. Again this was two years ago and I'm sure things have changed but nonetheless, how in …   more ›
