Woodland Hills School Board Might Conduct Official Superintendent Search

The school board is expected to vote on conducting a superintendent search.

Woodland Hills School District officials are considering beginning an official search for a superintendent. On Wednesday, the Woodland Hills School Board discussed possibly approving a search at the April 17 legislative meeting. The new superintendent's three or five-year term would most likely begin July 31. But some board members aren't in favor of conducting a search at all. The board didn't extend former superintendent Walter Calinger's contract at the end of 2012—he had been on medical leave since April 2012. Assistant Superintendent Alan Johnson has been acting as deputy superintendent since. School board member Jeff Hanchett said going out for a search would be "very unfair" to Johnson. "He's worked very hard during this period of …

Here is an idea: conduct a search for a SI that has produced academic results in a similar district. Failure to look for effective leadership would not be a good move.   more ›

Woodland Hills School Board Sets Agenda for Next Week's Meeting

Next week the board will discuss financial matters, personnel changes and the use of the school's facilities.

Woodland Hills School Board discussed issues of finance, personnel and school’s facilities at Wednesday's agenda setting meeting. At the Oct. 11 regular meeting, the board will discuss the approval of the activity funds from August. The activities funds were of particular interest to board member Colleen Filiak, who noticed an account with a negative balance. “We continue to have a negative balance in one of the high school class accounts. Is that being addressed?” Filiak asked her fellow board members. According to Filiak, a class account held a negative balance of $517, something that she said is theoretically not supposed to happen after a class has graduated and they can no longer use the money they raised. Joyce Sullivan, the board …

Woodland Hills School District Looks to Begin Advertising Campaign

Competition from charter and private schools are forcing districts to get creative.

Joe Lafferty wears his pride for Woodland Hills School District on his sleeve and he looks forward to telling people exactly why he thinks the district deserves the chance to educate the area's children. Lafferty gave a presentation during Wednesday’s school board meeting outlining how and why the district could and should market itself to parents of potential students. With charter schools opening in many school districts across Pennsylvania, competition between public and private schools are in a new realm of consumerism. More and more school districts, like McKeesport, now advertise within their communities. Woodland Hills budgeted $25,000 to be used for marketing, and Lafferty, who is a football coach in the district and a 1990 …

Woodland Hills School Board Members to Represent New Regions

Regions are changing this year in the school district

This year, the regions represented by Woodland Hills School Board members are changing. In September, the Court of Common Pleas approved a new regional plan for the school board that will go into effect after this year's elections. But the fight for new regions started two and a half years ago. In 2008, a citizens' group began researching for the potential region change, looking at populations, zoning lines and the benefits of rearranging the jurisdictions. They also petitioned the surrounding communities. The group then presented the three new regions to the school board and in June 2009, the board voted six to three in support of changing the regions. According to the new areas created, region one consists of Churchill, Wilkins, Chalfant…
