Parkway East Plan Concerns Regent Square Leaders

Input is sought on a plan that could include increased traffic, pedestrian safety and negative business impacts on South Braddock Avenue, among other issues.

Leaders in the Regent Square community are letting their voices be heard about a proposed PennDOT plan for the Parkway East that includes metering or closing on-ramps during the morning and/or evening rush hours in the inner-ring communities. Elected officials have been meeting together and with PennDOT representatives. They are working on a one-voice, multi-front campaign to raise awareness of the complexities of this traffic mitigation plan and the negative impact they believe it will have on the communities. Of greatest impact to the immediate area would be the ramps on South Braddock in Regent Square and on Swissvale Avenue/Ardmore Boulevard. For more details, visit http://www.regentsquare-rsca.org/ParkwayRamps.htm. "The elected …

Jo Ellen is correct. Look at the PennDot presentation information on the RSCA website. This is being done to save four and a half minutes on the trip from Monroeville to downtown. Yet they didn't bother to study the impacts on Braddock, Forbes, Penn Ave, etc. So, by my estimates we are expected to incease our travel time by 20 or 39 minutes, so the people in the far eastern suburbs will save less…   more ›

It looked very quiet there at 3 p.m. No opening day event of any kind. They appear to be offering (in addition to fuel) tobacco products, soda, snacks, propane, and full-service PA lottery.   more ›

Regent Square Sunoco Dismantled

The local gas station is going through a transformation.

The local Sunoco gas station at the corner of South Braddock and Hutchinson avenues is being torn down by construction workers, as a new Giant Eagle GetGo will replace it. Workers mounted the old gas pumps onto a truck Monday as they took away the old parts. Formerly owned by Dave Gerenyi, the change is occurring as he retired and sold the station to Giant Eagle.

This whole transaction happened entirely too quickly. This is definitely going to affect the "small feel neighborhood" with lines of cars down the street. That's what makes Regent Square so special -- its quaintness and independent stores, galleries, etc. GetGo just doesn't fit in o the theme. No happy about this one at all.   more ›

Going Away Party for Sunoco Organized by Edgewood Residents

The get-together will be held Thursday at the gas station.

Local residents are organizing a small going away party for the Regent Square Sunoco gas station, owned by Dave Gerenyi. Rosemary Steiner of Edgewood, Laura Horner and Steve Josowitz are throwing the small get-together, which will be held at the station at 11 a.m. this Thursday. Cakes, cookies and hoagies will be a part of the celebration. Steiner said the residents wanted to show their appreciation for what the gas station has done for the community over the years. Other residents have expressed concerns over the potential sale of the gas station to Giant Eagle for a GetGo location. Those residents worry about increased traffic and a change of character in the neighborhood.

Too bad this was not scheduled later in the day so people who work and would like to attend would be able to do so.   more ›

Community Forum: Sale of Sunoco

The Sunoco station is being sold and currently is in talks with Giant Eagle.

The pending sale of Dave's Gerenyi's Sunoco gas station in Regent Square will bring about a major change in the neighborhood. While Gerenyi is in talks with Giant Eagle to bring in a GetGo gas station to fill the space, details have yet to be revealed and the sale is not yet final. "To me, it's not final until we sit down and sign everything," Gerenyi said. The Regent Square Civic Association recently sent a letter to Edgewood Council, the borough in which the gas station is located. "Although many of the neighbors and board members are saddened at the loss of this valuable business, we understand that the sale is an inevitable part of change that happens to all communities," the letter states. "However, because of the strategic location …

Hi Justin - I think the RSCA would be a great organization for you to contact because they are speaking directly to Edgewood Council to see if they can do anything. You can email them directly at contact@regentsquare-rsca.org.   more ›
