Author Sarah Dessen spent the morning on Friday meeting with Pittsburgh-area students.
Braddock Hills Propel High School students had the chance for a Q&A session with award-winning and New York Times Best-Selling author Sarah Dessen last Friday. Dessen has written 10 novels for young adults including Someone Like You, Just Listen and Along for the Ride. Her newest book, The Moon and More, will be released in June. Dessen was visiting the Pittsburgh area as part of the Black and White and Read All Over lecture series, sponsored by Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures. Riverview Junior-Senior High School hosted the videoconference Q&A session with Dessen in the library— and Propel students, along with others from Hampton, Moon Area, Quaker Valley, Mt. A long line formed Saturday when Propel Braddock Hills High School hosted Play It Forward Pittsburgh's shopping event.
Inside was every child's dream—a room filled with toys, books, games, stuffed animals and even one of Santa's elves. Outside, excited parents waited patiently in a line that stretched along several store fronts at Braddock Hills Shopping Center, holding a ticket in their hands that, at this time of year, was a close second to a winning lottery ticket. It was more than a ticket to allow them to shop for free for holiday toys. It was a ticket to making their children's dreams come true. Propel Braddock Hills High School hosted Play It Forward Pittsburgh's shopping day on Saturday, where families who are in need or might be having a tough year were able to select up to five gently used toys for each of their children. The Green Schools program kicked off Friday with a day of workshops held by a Washington D.C. based organization.
Simon Jasiewicz is ready to make more green changes to his family’s Edgewood home after a day of energy-saving workshops at Propel Braddock Hills High School. The ninth grader is a member of the school’s Green Team, a group of students who are spearheading efforts in the Propel Braddock Hills building and beyond. The ultimate goal—transferring green knowledge and skills from the classroom to the students' homes and communities. “Today, I learned about phantom loads, which means the energy keeps building up and doesn’t go anywhere when you leave appliances plugged in,” Jasiewicz said. To combat that problem and save energy, he said he will encourage his family to use more power strips that can be turned on and off when they are not home. …
