A 19-month-old was shot and killed on Tuesday.
Pittsburgh police are investigating a triple shooting in the East Hills. On Tuesday, Zone 5 officers responded to a 911 call for someone shot in the 2300 block of East Hills Drive just after 7:30 p.m. On arrival, police found two females—ages 19 and 20—and a 19-month-old toddler had been shot. The female victims were take to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital and the toddler to UPMC Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. According to police, the 19-year-old underwent surgery for her wounds and is listed in serious but stable condition. The 20-year-old was shot in the back and chest. She is in critical condition. William Peduto will be the Democratic candidate for Pittsburgh mayor in the fall general election.
Bill Peduto will be the Democratic candidate for Pittsburgh mayor in the fall general election after defeating Jack Wagner. Peduto garnered 52 percent of the Democratic votes to Wagner's 40 percent. Also running were Democrats Jake Wheatley, who captured 8 percent of the Democratic votes and A.J. Richardson, who got 1 percent. The outbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East and the Edgewood/Swissvale parkway on-ramp will be closed this weekend, April 26 to 29. The closure will occur from 10 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday. Crews will continue to remove the outbound tunnel ceiling and rehabilitation and preservation work on the outbound bridge over Commercial Street. The on-ramp from the Edgewood/Swissvale (Exit 77) Interchange to eastbound I-376 will be closed this weekend for work in the immediate vicinity, necessitating the use of the alternative detour which runs through Wilkinsburg Borough. Get ready to experience some delays on the Parkway East for the next two weekends. The outbound (eastbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the parkway will be closed during the next two weekends, April 19 to 22 and April 26 to 29. The closures will begin earlier than usual—from 10 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday. Signs will be posted to guide motorists. The posted detour will require eastbound traffic to form a single lane exiting at the Squirrel Hill/Homestead interchange (Exit 74). Significant delays should be expected and alternate routes considered. The Christian-based ministry began in Forest Hills and is led by two Verona and Oakmont residents.
When Gina Stropkaj of Verona heard about a group called the Joyful Twirlers, she was ecstatic. "I couldn't believe there was a Christian organization doing something fun for girls," she said. "Baton twirling was something I did when I was younger, so I thought it would be something great that we could do together." The group, a Christian-based baton ministry, has been in existence for 13 years. Founded by Jessica Nigra of Forest Hills, the group began meeting and practicing at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church. For the last two years, Stropkaj has been acting as the group's director, and Oakmont resident Loretta Worsham has been acting as the assistant director of the group. Tunnel closure will begin on Friday.
The outbound (eastbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel will be closed this weekend, April 5-8, and significant delays should be expected and alternate routes considered. The closure will begin 11 p.m. on Friday, April 5, through 6 a.m. on Monday, April 8. Crews will begin work postponed from this past weekend to remove the outbound tunnel ceiling and continue rehabilitation and preservation work on the outbound bridge over Commercial Street. When overall work is completed, vertical clearance in the eastbound tunnel will increase from 13 feet, 6 inches to 14 feet, 9 inches. Signs will be posted to guide motorists.
