U.S. Steel Corp. will bring guest readers and donate books to the Heritage 4 Kids Early Learning Center in Braddock to celebrate Read Across America Day next month. Local community members will also be coming to the center at 404 Braddock Ave. at 9 a.m. March 1 to read to 70 preschool children. The guests will read books about safety, including themes of stranger danger, bullying and how to call 911. “U. S. State Rep. Paul Costa (D-Wilkins Township) was sworn in Tuesday for his eighth term representing the 34th Legislative District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. The swearing-in ceremony marked the beginning of the 197th legislative session. Sworn in were 91 Democrats and 111 Republicans for this legislative session. One Allegheny County seat is to be determined by a special election in the coming months. The state House returns to voting session in Harrisburg on Jan. 14. The 34th legislative district includes Edgewood, Forest Hills, Swissvale, Braddock, Braddock Hills, Chalfant, Churchill, North Braddock, Rankin, Turtle Creek, Ward 14 of the City of Pittsburgh and Wilkins Township. ELECTION RESULTS The polling place at the Forest Hills Fire Department station on Ardmore Boulevard already had more voters by mid-morning than had voted the entire day of the May primary election. "It's been a really good turnout today," said poll worker Linda Mallick. As of 10:15 a.m., 155 residents had cast their ballots, compared with 137 by the time the polls closed at 8 p.m. in May. The borough's 7th District has 740 registered voters. "We're hoping to get 70 percent," Mallick said, noting only 17 percent voted in the primary. One poll worker noted that what amazed her is that, despite the contentious atmosphere of the weeks leading up to today, is that "everyone seems happy."
