Check out new works by Judy Dickson this Sunday at Cafe Dez Artz.
I’ve had the privilege of attending more than one exhibit opening at Swissvale’s best-kept secret, the fabulous Cafe Dez Artz. And if you’re familiar with gallery events elsewhere - chic dresses and cheese cubes, mostly - you may be in for a surprise this Sunday. A Cafe Dez Artsz opening is fine art Swissvale style. Gather around the table, fill up a plate of food and chat with artist and neighbors alike. Picture having people over for the game - only replace the game with some brilliant artwork. This weekend, for example, the Cafe will be opening a new show by Judy Dickson, who has previously had work in mosaic and clay - including several breathtaking guitars covered in tiny tiles - on display. This time, though, she’ll be debuting her …

Woodland Hills' annual Alumni Cabaret will bring some familiar faces back to the spotlight.
For most young performers, the energy and magic of performing in a high school musical is something that arrives suddenly and vanishes with graduation. But, thanks to the Woodland Hills Foundation, some alumni have the chance to relive their moment in the spotlight. This Saturday, the sixth annual Alumni Cabaret will close the Woodland Hills All-District Art Show at the Braddock Carnegie Library. The showcase will give recent graduates and alumni of Woodland Hills’ musicals a chance to show off what they’ve learned since high school. “The Woodland Hills School District has become known for its musicals,” said Kathleen Good, a Woodland Hills Foundation board member and producer of the cabaret. “People had started to ask, ‘I wonder what this…

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday, Regent Square will turn into a bustling outdoor market.
I remember being very, very excited about yard sale day when I was a kid. True, my neighborhood was small, and only every third house or so actually sold anything. Furthermore, the hot items that I was always looking for - Super Nintendo games and pro wrestling videos, mainly - were usually not anywhere to be found. But the conversion of my quiet little neighborhood into one giant outdoor market was so unusual and so exciting that it didn’t matter. I’d madly flit from one house to the next, sorting through trinkets and trying to bargain people down from an exorbitant $5 to a much more reasonable $4. So if you’re anything like me, you’ll be doing just that this Saturday. The Regent Square Civic Association’s annual yard sale is this …

Foli's in Edgewood is everything a neighborhood bar should be.
A neighborhood bar should be more than just a place nearby with cheap drinks. It should be a place where you feel as comfortable as you do in your own living room; where you’re just as likely to get caught up in conversation or the ballgame as you are at your kitchen table. Many so-called neighborhood joints try for that feel, but it’s a tougher thing to put together than you’d think. For some places, though, it just comes naturally. And that’s the case at Foli’s Place in Edgewood. Founded in the late 90’s, this bar and restaurant feels like home. Pull up a comfortable, high-backed bar stool at the U-shaped main bar and order a beer. They’ve got an impressive list on tap, including gems from Great Lakes, Troegs, Harpoon, and Hoegaarden; …

The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf presents its annual Deaf Wrestlefest fundraiser this weekend.
Many different events come to mind when planning a fundraiser. Walks or 5K runs are popular. So are bake sales or crafts fairs. Auctions—silent or otherwise—certainly work. In a way, these are the staples of fundraising efforts nationwide. So when it came time for the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf to create an annual event, officials naturally chose to present 12 matches of intense professional wrestling action. Certainly a more extreme option than a 5K. The 2011 edition of Deaf Wrestlefest will take place at the school this Sunday at 6 p.m. Presented with the assistance of Keystone State Wrestling Alliance, a local independent wrestling federation, and sponsored by the WPSD Parent-Staff Organization, the event showcases some …

Whether you're looking for yoga, zumba, or an all-out workout, there are options nearby.
Last week’s Patch Picks helped you relax and pamper yourself after a tough winter. And this week, we’re focusing on your health and fitness again - but you’ll have to work a bit harder. There are any number of ways to get fit in the area, from the demanding to the tranquil - and where better to start than at the still-new big kid on the block, Planet Fitness at Edgewood Town Center? The welcoming gym advertises itself as a gym for everyone, scoffing at so-called “lunks” (check the walls for a definition) that you may have seen throwing weights around at other spots. Here, you’ll find everything from young athletes testing themselves on the 30-minute cross training course to friends and neighbors of all ages keeping in shape on one of the …

Edgewood's Curry Away is a perfect Thai restaurant in an unassuming spot.
Edgewood is full of surprises, I’ve found, and they’re usually something bordering on delightful. One of the best is hidden in the tiny shopping plaza on Edgewood Avenue, facing the train tracks. Most of what’s here is typical—a convenience store, a laundromat, an absolutely sensational Thai restaurant. Wait, what? Curry Away is the unexpected gem in this unassuming strip of retail, slinging delicious dishes out of a tiny storefront. I knew it would be good, as it satisfies the first rule of all good Thai places (have a funny name), but I didn’t reckon that the small shop across the tracks from Edgewood Town Center would turn out to be one of the best Thai places in town. Hearty portions of curry with fresh vegetables and just the right …

This week, Regent Square Theater kicks off a month-long series of films about labor struggles.
It’s not unusual for Pittsburgh Filmmakers and the Regent Square Theater to tackle important societal issues in their film choices. Far removed from the Hollywood fare at the multiplex, the selections in Regent Square often deal directly with important topics having an impact on national and global culture; and fortunately, the power and influence of Pittsburgh Filmmakers allows Regent Square to put great series of special screenings together. This month, they’re giving you the chance to think about the current conflict over organized labor and workers' rights while revisiting some of cinema’s greatest stars along the way. A four-part Sunday night series, “Which Side Are You On?” begins this week. The screenings kick off April 3 with John …

Spiritworks Yoga Studio presents the LUNAFEST Film Festival this weekend, but be sure to eat beforehand!
Spiritworks Yoga Studio is giving you two chances to see LUNAFEST, a one-of-a-kind collection of 10 short films by women filmmakers, this weekend — Saturday night at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. LUNAFEST is about women’s stories — from documentaries about historical trailblazers to short works of fiction about the connections we make on a day-to-day basis. It’s also a fine way to support women, as the net proceeds will be split between the Breast Cancer Fund and owner Patricia Brown’s mother, “Mama Arlene.” Arlene is Spiritworks normal beneficiary — she’s currently residing in Rwanda, where she’s “Mama” to 50 children as part of the Hope Made Real program. It’s an entertaining night in support of a worthy cause at one of Patch’s …

Regent Square Civic Association and partnering organizations will teach you how to make your house feel great this Saturday! Also, time for a movie!
How’s your house feeling these days? A little snow-ravaged? Gutters gouged? Windows weary? Paint peeling? Not exactly bound for HGTV anytime soon? If your humble abode is feeling a bit too humble, the fine folks at a quartet of local organizations — the Greater Park Place Neighborhood Association, Regent Square Civic Association, Neighbors Unite Wilkinsburg and the Community Design Center of Pittsburgh — are presenting a free workshop on beautifying your place. They’re calling it “Curb Appeal: Adding Value to Your Home and Community,” and it’s this Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Mifflin Avenue United Methodist Church in Regent Square. The two-hour workshop will be broken in half, kicking off with presentations from local home experts on …
