PennDOT says motorists should use caution and be aware of changing traffic patterns when driving through the area.
Work to repair barriers on the Parkway East (I-376) will occur on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, May 14-15, weather permitting. Crews from Penn Line Service, Inc. will perform repairs on concrete median barriers each night. Single-lane restrictions are expected to occur through Thursday, May 16.
Work to remove protective shielding under the bridge that carries the Parkway East (I-376) over South Braddock Avenue in the Edgewood and Swissvale boroughs is expected to continue this week. Single lane traffic will occur as needed on South Braddock Avenue, in the area of the I-376 bridge, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Thursday, May 16. The northbound South Braddock Avenue on-ramp to inbound Parkway East overnight closures begin Monday.
The ramp from northbound South Braddock Avenue to the westbound (inbound) Parkway East (I-376) in Edgewood and Swissvale boroughs will be closed nightly beginning on Monday, April 29, weather permitting. The ramp closure will occur from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights and from 9 p.m. to 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights. Work will continue through May 10. Signs will be posted to guide motorists. Posted detour: The on-ramp to the inbound Parkway East from southbound South Braddock Avenue will remain open. Please allow extra time when traveling through the area and consider alternate routes. Crews will be replacing expansion dams. The outbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East and the Edgewood/Swissvale parkway on-ramp will be closed this weekend, April 26 to 29. The closure will occur from 10 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday. Crews will continue to remove the outbound tunnel ceiling and rehabilitation and preservation work on the outbound bridge over Commercial Street. The on-ramp from the Edgewood/Swissvale (Exit 77) Interchange to eastbound I-376 will be closed this weekend for work in the immediate vicinity, necessitating the use of the alternative detour which runs through Wilkinsburg Borough. Get ready to experience some delays on the Parkway East for the next two weekends. The outbound (eastbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the parkway will be closed during the next two weekends, April 19 to 22 and April 26 to 29. The closures will begin earlier than usual—from 10 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday. Signs will be posted to guide motorists. There will be single-lane closures and traffic shifts during the outbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel closure.
Overhead sign safety inspections on the outbound Parkway East will occur on Saturday morning, April 6, weather permitting. Work requiring intermittent single-lane closures and traffic shifts will occur from 6 a.m. to noon on the outbound Parkway East between Churchill (Exit 79B) and the Monroeville/Plum (Exit 84) interchanges. Two of three outbound lanes will remain open at all times. Inbound traffic will not be affected. There is also an outbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel closure this weekend. The outbound (eastbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel will be closed this weekend, April 5-8, and significant delays should be expected and alternate routes considered. The closure will begin 11 p.m. on Friday, April 5, through 6 a.m. on Monday, April 8. Crews will begin work postponed from this past weekend to remove the outbound tunnel ceiling and continue rehabilitation and preservation work on the outbound bridge over Commercial Street. Expect residual delays.
A multi-vehicle crash occurred Thursday morning before 11 on the inbound Parkway East between the Edgewood Swissvale interchange (Exit 77) and the Squirrel Hill Tunnel. The left lane was blocked, but is now back open. PennDOT officials say drivers should expect residual delays. It's unclear if injuries were involved.
