Hearing on Fairless Elementary Closing Brings Parent Protests

A hearing Tuesday night gave the school board feedback on the plan to close the North Braddock School and turn it into a 'Family Centre.'

Woodland Hills School Board heard the concerns of parents and North Braddock residents who don’t want to see the students have to be bussed out of the area to attend other schools. The district held a public meeting on its plan to close the school at the end of the school year. KDKA-TV reports that some parents were concerned about transportation issues should their children get sick at school. Currently, Fairless serves only pupils from North Braddock. Last week, the district introduced a plan that calls for the school to be turned into a "Family Services Centre." The center would be a one-stop shop for young families, providing them with connections to help them with heating bills, food, screenings, speech/language services, …

How's that great merger plan working out for ya? We have so decimated the school districts that are involved that we can't even fill the schools anymore. How about you leave this school open and have it be like the old days with 1 principal and with local kids going there from k-12 or k-8 at least. Whatever the capacity is.   more ›

Woodland Hills Looks at a Proactive Approach for Preschool Families

Part I of a four-part series on Woodland Hills' 'Long-Range Plan for Excellence.'

When children in Woodland Hills School District start kindergarten, they all enter through the same door—but not with the same skills. "In Woodland Hills, a lot of our kids come to school at age 5 who are so significantly behind their peers," Substitute Superintendent Alan Johnson said in an interview with Patch this week. The long-range plan being introduced for consideration by the school board includes a focus on children from birth to preschool. As the district works to reorganize its schools to be more cost effective and provide better learning opportunities, it will be looking at giving its youngest students a better start in their educational careers. For that reason, the long-range plan recommends opening a "Family Services Centre…

A New Vincent's Pizza is Rising from the (Oven) Ashes

A new look for an old favorite along Route 30 at the North Braddock/Forest Hills border.

The sign along Route 30 that features a picture of the late Vincent Chianese tossing the dough for his famous "Vinnie Pies" in the air says it all: "Coming soon." Work has been progressing steadily on the building where Chianese opened his pizza shop and bar in 1950. The building is owned by Chianese's daughter, Toni Zollner, who had hinted at a comeback for the landmark that served a Pittsburgh classic. The outside looks like a whole new building—a big change from the dated look the pizza shop and bar had when it closed last spring. The only questions remaining are: How soon? Will it retain the name Vincent's Pizza Park? And what does the inside look like? Are you looking forward to the return of the Vinnie Pie? Do you have a favorite …

Mother of Twins Killed in Fire Waives Preliminary Hearing

Authorities say the boys turned on a burner on a grease-covered stove, which ignited the grease, spreading the fire through the house.

Delawna Berran-Lett, the North Braddock mother whose twin sons perished in a fire earlier this month, waived her right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday on two counts each of involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child. WTAE-TV reports that Berran-Lett left her 3-year-old sons, Ky'heir and Dy'heir Arthur, alone for about an hour, according to Allegheny County homicide detectives, while she went to look for her teenage daughter. Berran-Lett was angry because she thought the daughter had taken marijuana from her purse, District Attorney Stephen Zappala said. Allegheny County fire marshals found that the fatal house fire on Jan. 4 began in a stove. The boys turned on a burner on a grease-covered …
