Ways to Go Greener in Forest Hills-Regent Square Area

Here's a list of some places to take items that should not be sent to landfills or placed at the curb.

Although Earth Day is officially April 22, it's not too early for residents of Regent Square and Forest Hills, Swissvale, Edgewood and Wilkinsburg boroughs to begin to look at ways to be more environmentally friendly. The following is a list of items, provided in part by the Allegheny County Health Department, that should not be in landfills and generally aren't collected through municipal recycling. Parkway East Overhead Sign Inspections to Occur Saturday in Churchill

Motorists should be aware of these additional parkway restrictions.

Motorists traveling inbound on the parkway will experience some restrictions Saturday. Overhead sign safety inspections on the inbound Parkway East (westbound I-376) in Churchill will occur on Saturday morning, March 23, weather permitting. Work requiring intermittent single-lane closures and traffic shifts will occur from 6 a.m. to noon on the inbound Parkway East between the Monroeville/Route 22 (Exit 80) and Churchill (Exit 79B) interchanges. Mackin Engineering and the Sofis Rigging Company will conduct the work. U.S. Marshals Arrest Fugitive in 2012 North Braddock Shooting

Carl Henderson, 18, of North Braddock has been arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force on charges of criminal attempt-criminal homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and possession of a firearm. Henderson (also known as "Trigger") is alleged to have shot a female victim once in the abdomen following a verbal altercation on Bell Avenue in North Braddock that occurred on April 8, 2012. Henderson, who was 17 at the time of this incident, is being charged as an adult in this case. The Money in Your Pocket Coalition Free Tax Preparation Campaign can help financially struggling individuals and families file their 2013 federal, state and local tax returns. There are 11 locations staffed with IRS-trained tax preparers throughout Allegheny County, including two nearby in Homewood—at the YMCA and YWCA branches—and one at Community College-Boyce Campus in Monroeville. Three Area Men Sentenced in Federal Court for Large-Scale Heroin Trafficking

Three residents of the Pittsburgh area, including a man from Wilkinsburg, have been sentenced in federal court after being convicted of violating federal narcotics trafficking and firearms laws. Senior U.S. District Judge Donetta W. Forbes Regional Honors Breast Cancer Survivors by Lighting the Hospital ‘Pink’

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and a local hospital is kicking it off with some pink. Beginning Monday, Oct. 1, the signage atop Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville will be lit pink. The Forbes sign will remain pink all month long in recognition of those who have been touched by breast cancer.  Forbes will be supporting Breast Cancer Awareness all month long with different events in an effort to educate employees, patients, and visitors about the importance of screening and early detection. Two Flu Vaccination Clinics Set in Edgewood, Monroeville

Forbes Regional Hospital is offering a clinic on Friday and Eastern Area PreHospital Services has a free one set for Oct. 16.

Residents of the Forest Hills-Regent Square area can take advantage of two public flu clinics being offered this month. Monroeville Forbes Regional Hospital will be hosting a public flu vaccination clinic on Friday, Oct. 5, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the hospital’s Learning Centers. Appointments are available by calling the West Penn Allegheny Physician Access Line at 1-877-284-2000. Appointments are not required; walk-ins are welcome.  Patients covered by Medicare Part B should bring their card to the vaccination session so that Forbes Regional can bill their Medicare carrier directly.  Non-Medicare patients should be prepared to pay $25 at the time of vaccination.
