Habitat for Humanity Honors MLK Monday through Volunteer Projects

The Forest Hills-based Greater Pittsburgh branch will conduct 25 service projects with 500 volunteers to remember Martin Luther King Jr.'s service legacy.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh, based in Forest Hills, will host its second annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service event on Monday, Jan. 21. The affordable housing nonprofit has organized 25 different service projects across the region with more than 500 volunteers registered to make their traditional day off a “day on” with Habitat. The MLK Day of Service is the largest volunteer effort in the region for the holiday—and volunteers will put in about 3,500 hours of service. The volunteers will be working in 17 different neighborhoods around greater Pittsburgh. Volunteers will convene in Braddock at 8:30 a.m. at the Nyia Page Community Center, 416 Library St., Braddock for a free breakfast, T-shirts, orientation and opening…

300 to Volunteer at Shady Side Academy’s MLK Day of Service

You can get involved!

Approximately 300 volunteers from Shady Side Academy will participate in hands-on community service projects at nine locations on the Academy’s second annual MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 16. The volunteers, which include roughly 200 students in grades PK-12 and 100 parents, faculty and staff, will celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday by volunteering on this national day of service, making it “a day ON, not a day off.” Community organizations being served include the East End Cooperative Ministry, Bethlehem Haven Shelter, Braddock Carnegie Library, the Pittsburgh Project, Pittsburgh Toy Lending Library, HealthSouth Harmarville Rehabilitation Hospital, the Kingsley Center of East Liberty and the Woodlands Foundation. My sons took part in this even today (the date in the article is incorrect). My 9-year old son helped prep care packages of toiletries and necessities for shelters and my 12-year old worked in the library at Children's Hospital. I'm proud of them.   more ›
