As the ongoing flu epidemic continues around the United States, some church leaders around the country are changing procedures and issuing recommendations for avoiding the contagious ailment while worshipping. At masses this weekend in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, however, signs of peace and wine distribution from communal chalices during Communion will follow regular procedures, a diocesan spokesman said Friday. That includes St. Maurice, Word of God, Madonna del Castello, St. James, Good Shepherd and St. John Fisher parishes. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops this week said it does not see the need for widespread changes to liturgy to prevent the spread of the flu nationally. By Rev. Dai Morgan Early in October, one is likely to behold a surprising sight, a procession of animals—dogs, cats, guinea pigs, lizards, boa constrictors, parrots, horses … you name it. Of course, as fantastic as this spectacle might appear, when it becomes apparent that this menagerie is parading off to church, one’s amazement is likely to be even more pronounced. The purpose of this gathering is a special ceremony, The Blessing of the Animals. This ritual is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. I don't believe people should drink from the chalice. If you don't share drinks with friends why share them with strangers. I believe that if you wish to share the wine the Catholic Church should do as many Protestant Churches do and offer small plastic individual cups to each person who wishes to partake. more ›
