North Allegheny held onto halftime lead as Wolverines fight wind, turnovers in second half.

By Bill Allmann After an opening game at Heinz Field that saw 79 points scored, North Allegheny and Woodland Hills picked up where Clairton and Sto-Rox left off, scoring 35 in the first half of the WPIAL Class AAAA Championship. Unfortunately for Woodland Hills’ fans, though, North Allegheny’s 21-14 halftime lead stood the test of time through a scoreless second half and the Tigers won their third straight WPIAL title and fourth overall. “I was surprised there were 35 points scored in the first half,” said Woodland Hills coach George Novak. “North Allegheny has a great defense and our defense played well.” Both defenses belied their reputations early as each team scored on its first possession. On those drives, Zach Lyon made a one-handed …

Patch Poll: Love or Hate the Steelers' Throwback Uniforms?

For the first time, the Pittsburgh Steelers will wear their horizontally striped throwback jerseys and socks in a game when they take on the Washington Redskins today at Heinz Field. What's your take on the 1934 replicas?

Killer bees? Depression chic? Those are some of the kinder phrases thrown about by some Pittsburgh Steelers fans who are less than thrilled that players will be donning throwback uniforms at 1 p.m. today when they meet the Washington Redskins at Heinz Field. Steelers officials unveiled the black-and-gold horizontally striped jerseys and socks earlier this year in honor of the team's 80th anniversary. The Steelers haven't worn this style of uniform since 1934, and the throwback garb is intended to reflect the team's Depression-era roots. Steelers’ players are looking forward to wearing the throwbacks today for the first time in a game, according to the team's official blog on its website. Players say they enjoy celebrating the team's …

Regent Square "Rogues" Cheer for Batman Experience at Heinz Field

A local couple enjoyed being extras in Chris Nolan's final Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises."

Erin and Dominic Giambelluca traded the Pittsburgh Steelers for the “Gotham Rogues” Saturday as they cheered on the doomed football team among explosions and Hollywood’s elite. The Regent Square couple immediately signed up to be extras in the upcoming film, Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, starring Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy and a slew of other stars after seeing a notice on Twitter. “I love Batman and my husband does too, and it’s a once in a lifetime kind of thing,” Erin said. “I just wanted to see what it was like to shoot a movie and be there for it.” She said the day started with traffic only Batman can bring. The couple arrived an hour late because of the parkway snarls downtown, but took a shuttle to Heinz Field …
