The running back/linebacker will join fellow senior all-stars in Hershey this June.
The Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association has chosen Woodland Hills High School running back/linebacker Alex Beasley as a member of Team Pennsylvania for the Big 33 Football Classic this June. The team is made up of senior all-stars from around the commonwealth. Pennsylvania will play Team Maryland, another group of all-stars, at Hersheypark Stadium on June 15 at 7:06 p.m. in the 56th version of this game. (View Pennsylvania's entire roster—including many WPIAL players and coaches—here.) The 6-foot, 240-pound Beasley was added to the roster as an inside linebacker—one of just two from the entire state. "You're talking over 500 schools in the state," said George Novak, Beasley's head coach at Woodland Hills High. "And you're …

Wes Lyons makes his writing debut with 'The Pursuit with Patience.'
Whether or not Wes Lyons will play in the NFL again remains to be seen—he appeared in all four of the Pittsburgh Steelers' 2011 preseason games—but his writing career is off and running with the November publishing of his first book, "The Pursuit with Patience." Lyons, a Woodland Hills High School and West Virginia University alum, started writing the book after he was released by the Steelers in 2011. (He ended up back with the team in 2012 but is no longer with them.) The goal of the book, as Lyons says on his website, "is to inspire at least one person." He continues, "That would make all the hard work and time that I have dedicated to writing 'The Pursuit with Patience' worth it in the end." Wesley A. Lyons Jr. was raised in North …

Novak is the only coach in Wolverines history.
Woodland Hills High School defied most pundits’ expectations in 2012 by racking up a 10-3 record and a berth in the WPIAL’s AAAA football championship game at Heinz Field. The Wolverines lost that game by a touchdown to the current state finalists from North Allegheny High School, but the Pittsburgh Steelers—the hosts of Heinz—have seen enough in Woody High’s head coach to include him as one of the 2012 Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year nominees. Coach George Novak has been with Woodland Hills for 26 seasons and has won six WPIAL titles (five at Woody High). He is the first and only director of athletics for the Woodland Hills School District and head coach of the district’s varsity football program. Novak and the program have …

By Bill Allmann After an opening game at Heinz Field that saw 79 points scored, North Allegheny and Woodland Hills picked up where Clairton and Sto-Rox left off, scoring 35 in the first half of the WPIAL Class AAAA Championship. Unfortunately for Woodland Hills’ fans, though, North Allegheny’s 21-14 halftime lead stood the test of time through a scoreless second half and the Tigers won their third straight WPIAL title and fourth overall. “I was surprised there were 35 points scored in the first half,” said Woodland Hills coach George Novak. “North Allegheny has a great defense and our defense played well.” Both defenses belied their reputations early as each team scored on its first possession. On those drives, Zach Lyon made a one-handed …

Wolverines capitalize on Panthers' mistakes.
Woodland Hills defeated Upper St. Clair in the WPIAL playoff semifinals Friday night, 42-20. The Panthers were never able to overcome a first quarter of mistakes. The game began with Upper St. Clair fumbling the opening kickoff, in which Woodland Hills capitalized on with a touchdown. Then Upper St. Clair had a bad snap and Woodland Hills turned it into another touchdown. That was followed by another Upper St. Clair fumble that Woodland Hills scores on. The Panthers kept the game interesting, scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter. But there were more mistakes for USC in the second half. Woodland Hills caught three interceptions—two of them in the endzone. Upper St. Clair ended the year with a 10-2 record. Woodland Hills moves on to …

Mustangs shutout 35-0, remain winless.
Woodland Hills scored less than two minutes into the contest, and never looked back, as the Wolverines dominated the Mustangs en route to a 35-0 victory Friday night at Plum. The Mustangs (0-4, 0-4 WPIAL AAAA Southeastern Conference) turned the ball over on the second play from scrimmage, as Plum senior quarterback Corey DeLoach had his pass intercepted by Khalil Harper, who returned it to the Mustangs’ 8-yard-line. Two plays later, Dequan White found the end zone to put the Wolverines ahead, a lead they would never relinquish. Plum Head Coach Frank Sacco emphasized the significance of the poor start. “We shoot ourselves in the foot on the first drive,” Sacco said. “You can’t do that against a football team like Woodland Hills. They are …

This book is basically self-published (CreateSpace is listed as the publisher on Amazon and it's just a tool for self-publishing) and was therefore not subject to any editorial supervision. I don't see how a self-published book merits attention, since anyone can do it. How about articles on local authors who actually go through the traditional publishing process?   more ›
