Braddock Hills officials have approached Forest Hills and Swissvale fire companies with an interest to merge.
Forest Hills Volunteer Fire Department officials say they're open to merging with a neighboring community. At a council public safety committee meeting earlier this week, fire department President Rick Colella said FHVFD members had been approached by Braddock Hills Council about merging the two boroughs' fire departments. Swissvale also has been approached with the same offer. Councilman Bill Tomasic said council members never were made aware of the possible talks and negotiations with Braddock Hills. He said the decision ultimately is up to council, and Braddock Hills officials should contact Forest Hills officials in writing. Tomasic said he is not in favor of a merger. An arrest warrant might be issued for a suspect who led the store manager on a chase after a retail theft on Dec. 23 at the Rite-Aid at 2336 Ardmore Blvd. According to a Forest Hills police report, the store manager told police he saw the suspect lurking in the battery aisle. The manager then saw the suspect stuff a number of batteries into his pockets. When the suspect approached the counter, the manager confronted the suspect and a struggle ensued. The suspect dropped several batteries then ran outside the store with the manager in pursuit. Once in the parking lot, the manager, with the help of several bystanders, attempted to restrain the man, but he fled across Yost Boulevard into the Plaza Shopping Center. The manager jumped in his …

Council approves a fire services fee and updated police policies.
At a meeting largely dominated by a decision to ban gas drilling, Forest Hills Council also passed an ordinance implementing a "Fire Protection Services Fee," which will be implemented this December. Council also approved a number of updated police policies. According to Council President Frank Porco, the fire services fee was enacted to help pay for a new fire truck, as well as to help with yearly payments to the fire department, whose yearly cost amounts to $71,000 and $75,000, respectively. In December, households will pay a fee of $45. Businesses will pay twice that amount, $90, and residents renting apartments will pay half, $22.50, according to Borough Manager Steve Morus. Our volunteer fire dept stopped using the siren several years ago. They switched to pagers first, now I believe they use text messages. Just a thought.   more ›
