Wednesday was a bit nippy for September and leaves seem to be turning colors earlier this year. Downed leaves are lining a few driveways in Forest Hills, the large trees in Edgewood are trading shades and in Swissvale, fall flowers are setting the palette for nature's artistic streak to come in a few weeks. Three florists weigh in on what to order your sweetheart for Valentine's Day.
Malone Flower Shop Manager Jan Taylor said a dozen red roses are nice, but that when it comes to Valentine’s Day, there’s more to gifting than red and white. But men still seek out the holiday staple, though, she said, “because that’s what they know.” So gentleman, listen up: Taylor said there are tons of other options for your sweetie at your local flower shops. One tip from the Canonsburg shop? Mix it up a little bit! “I think a vase with mixed flowers is so pretty,” Taylor said. “There are gorgeous hydrangea, lilies and snapdragons.” Deborah Carso, owner of Crossroad Florist in Peters, agreed. And she said the special gift for the woman in your life on Valentine's Day doesn't necessarily even need to be a vase of posies. "A lot of women…

Flowers Flowers are the gold standard of Valentine’s Day gifts, but they don’t necessarily have to be given out of undying love. Various rose colors have different meanings (yellow, for example, signifies friendship). Roses are the classic, but if you have a daisy lover or tulip enthusiast on your mind, don’t be afraid to change it up! If you go for flowers, check out your local florist. Fresher flowers, a more personal touch…

Zarnigar Chowdhury does a little bit of everything. A recent immigrant from Bangladesh, Zarnigar is a prolific creator, painting, creating wax flowers, making candles, sewing floral designs, cooking and baking a variety of scrumptious dishes. Since relocating to Regent Square from the capital city of Dhaka, Bangladesh in September, Chowdhury is eager to share her art and skills in the Pittsburgh area. "I like painting flowers, I love the colors," Chowdhury said. "My style of painting is very different than most. I start out with a color I like and then create the flower out of that and I normally work on three to four canvases at a time." Chowdhury and her husband, Hasan, a former Bangladeshi ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, moved …

Swissvale resident's daylilies bring her both local and natural attention.
It may not be advertised, but during the summer months, a narrow alley behind West Swissvale Avenue is the gathering point for one of the main attractions of the neighborhood. Dog walkers will stop, cars will slow down and residents will purposely re-route their evening walks in the alley's direction to see an outstanding daylily collection, fashioned by an award-winning gardener and active community member. "When you start a garden, you find that the community spreads on either side," said gardener Mary Pope, 80, of Swissvale. "People stop and talk. That's how you get to know your neighbors. But we're the old timers here. They get to know us." Pope is the owner of the property that houses this well-known horticultural beauty. Although…
