Here are the Forest Hills police reports for April 19 to 25.
A motorist in Forest Hills fell asleep behind the wheel last week. According to a Forest Hills police report, police were called to the Ardmore Boulevard/Marion Avenue intersection at 5:45 a.m. on April 21 for reports of a man sleeping in a car. The driver and a passenger both were asleep. The car, located in a turning lane, was still in drive and the driver's foot was on the brake. The driver failed a portable breath test and field sobriety tests. Charges against the driver are pending. April 19 A man will be charged with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness after police found him lying on the ground at the intersection of Ardmore Boulevard and Sylvan Way. Edgewood police officers were called to Edgewood Primary on April 16 after a 9-year-old student brought a portion of a plastic toy BB gun to school. The incident will be handled by the school administration. The following incidents also were reported to the Edgewood Police Department: April 14 Retail theft was reported at Giant Eagle at Edgewood Towne Centre. Some people favor efforts by local DUI task forces to combat intoxicated drivers, but others worry that it's more a "police state" tactic.
Throughout Pennsylvania—and locally—drinking and driving is one of the top safety issues for police. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's Crash Facts and Statistics booklet, there were 11,805 alcohol-related crashes in the state in 2011, down from 12,426 alcohol-related crashes in 2010. Alcohol-related deaths decreased from 459 to 428 in that same period. In 2011, alcohol-related deaths were 33 percent of the total traffic deaths in Pennsylvania, a nearly steady rate over the last several years. Throughout the state, local police widely use sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols to help take intoxicated drivers off the road.
