Annual Forest Hills Tree Burning Set for Jan. 11

Trees will be collected by the Forest Hills Public Works Department prior to the ceremony.

There might be rain in the forecast, but Forest Hills will hold its annual Christmas Tree Burning Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at the Forest Hills/Westinghouse Lodge on Barclay Avenue. The Forest Hills Lions and Forest Hills Civic Association will serve hot dogs, coffee and hot chocolate. Trees can be put at the curb for pickup by borough public works crews. Ways to Recycle Your Christmas Tree

Is your Christmas tree dropping its needles or looking a little tired? Drop it off to be turned into mulch at a county park or add it to the pile for Forest Hills' annual tree burning.

It's time to take down those Christmas trees. Forest Hills will hold its annual Christmas Tree Burning Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at the Forest Hills/Westinghouse Recreation Center on Barclay Avenue. More information will be available on Patch later this week. Allegheny County's fifth annual Christmas tree recycling program runs through Saturday, Jan. 19, at all nine regional parks—including Boyce Park in Plum Borough. To participate in the county's program, residents can drop off trees from dawn to dusk daily. All lights, decorations, tinsel and stands must be removed from trees.  The trees will be turned into mulch for use in Allegheny County’s nine regional parks. Fire Safety Tips for the Winter and Holiday Season

Here are some tips to keep your family safe this winter.

The holidays and winter can be a wonderful time of the year, but only if you're safe. The National Fire Protection Association and National Fire Sprinkler Association are providing tips to prevent fires during a season of dry Christmas trees and space heaters. According to the NFPA, a fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly. To see how quick, watch the attached video. Extend Life of Christmas Tree with Fire Marshal's Tea Recipe

Mixing a concoction of things that can be found at the corner store will extend the life and luster of fresh firs.

Editor's note: This story comes to us from our sister Patch in Stow, OH. A reminder that Boy Scout Troop 23 is selling Christmas trees the next two weekends at Koenig Field in Edgewood. If you're buying a live Christmas tree just this year, the following recipe will extend the life of a live tree, according to an Ohio firefighter.  Most Christmas trees are expected to live only a couple of weeks after being cut down. But Stow Fire Department Marshal Jim Leidel has a recipe, he says, that extends the life and luster of the fresh firs. "No fire-proofing technique works 100 percent of the time," Leidel said. Sounds like quite the elixir! Many, many years ago, I read a tip in the Pittsburgh Press about extending a Christmas tree's life, and it's worked like a charm for over 30 years, and very simple. Take a large drill bit and drill 4 or 5 holes in the truck of the tree. Plug each hole with moistened cotton balls -- stuff them in there until it's packed. Juniper Village Hosts Celebration of Trees

Admire the beauty in these local Christmas trees.

The public is invited to tour Juniper Village at Forest Hills fourth annual Celebration of Trees Holiday Display. Attendees can see a display of more than 25 Christmas trees decorated in a variety of unique holiday themes and vote for their favorite tree, with the winning organization receiving a donation of $250 for their favorite charity. The Celebration of Trees Holiday Display runs through Jan. 4 and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Juniper Village at Forest Hills is a senior living, personal care and specialized memory impairment care community located just off of Ardmore Boulevard at 107 Fall Run Road in Forest Hills.
