Sunday Reflections: Elvis Has Left the Building

The Rev. Ron Breight shared a column with Patch.

Many years have passed since the great singer and performer, Elvis Presley, died on August 16, 1977. The loss of Elvis was so profound for many that they often claimed to see him back from the dead. This phenomenon rose to the point where Elvis sightings have become an urban legend. In reality, Elvis is gone. His autopsy is on file. It is planned to be released to the public in 2027 (fifty years after his death), which will give proof of his demise. An opposite phenomenon occurred after Jesus’ death. There were many proofs that He indeed was alive again. The Gospels record some of the “sightings” for us. Jesus appeared to the men who were travelling to Emmaus. Jesus visited Thomas and the other disciples who were gathered together in a …

Sunday Reflections: Under the Sea

A Lenten reflection.

By Rev. Ronald Breight He will again have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.     Micah 7:19 Some of the most frightening and horrifying animals on earth live in the seas. As I page through books with my youngest son, Timothy, we often gasp at pictures of these creatures from both past and present. Ancient seas were home to such monster-like creatures as the Kronosaurus, Svalbard Pliosaur and Megalodon. Today’s oceans still harbor beasts such as the Snaggletooth, Viper fish and Goblin Shark. The sheer variety of sizes and shapes in the animal kingdom is breathtaking. Some of these under water beings are simply bloodcurdling! Lent is a return to baptism. Jesus’ 40 …

National Lutheran Schools Week is Special for Forest Hills School

Christ Lutheran School plans fun activities from Jan. 27 to Feb. 1 to celebrate being part of Lutheran schools nationwide.

National Lutheran School Week begins on a Sunday, giving students at Christ Lutheran School in Forest Hills a chance to kick off a week of celebration by thanking the congregation that helps support the small, family-like school. This year's theme is "Baptized for This Moment." Appropriately, after Sunday's services, students will present churchgoers with bottles of water labeled with a Bible verse. School students will also participate as ushers and greeters for the 8 and 11 a.m. church services, which all school families have been invited to attend. "God is part of everything we do here," said Christ Lutheran Principal Ellen Linhart, who also teaches at the school. "In our schools, the whole curriculum is immersed in Christian culture …

Skateboarding Death Prompts Forest Hills Initiative

The death of Hank Woodhall, 16, last week has Forest Hills police Chief Chuck Williams looking into securing helmets for local skateboarders.

The tragic death of Hank Woodhall, 16, of Forest Hills in a skateboarding accident last week has Forest Hills police Chief Chuck Williams working to try to ensure the safety of other local skateboarders. Williams, who has children of his own, was moved by the accident that took Woodhall's life. Because the incident occurred in neighboring Chalfant, which is patrolled by Forest Hills police, people in both communities are talking about the mishap. As a result, Williams is in contact with Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC to find a way to provide helmets for local youths who do not have them. Although details still have to be worked out, he is hoping to have some helmets available to distribute during the borough's annual hayride on …

Maybe they can ask for monetary donations at the hayride or other local events like maybe at the Friday farmer's market. It's such a sad story.   more ›

Hank Woodhall's head hit the pavement as he was riding downhill on Fairview Avenue in Chalfant on Thursday night. His funeral is set for Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church.

Friends and family members gathered for a vigil in Chalfant on Sunday night to remember Hank Woodhall, 16, of Forest Hills, who died after a skateboarding accident last week. The Woodland Hills High School student, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, slammed his head into the pavement along Fairview Avenue as he was riding down the hill Thursday evening. Friends said Hank had been riding the RipStik, which is a cross between a skateboard and a snowboard with two wheels, according to WTAE-TV. Though doctors performed brain surgery, it was unsuccessful and he was taken off life support Saturday night. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Wolfe Memorial Inc, Forest Hills Chapel. His funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the …
