Though Catholic Schools Week is an annual tradition in parochial schools nationwide, for East Catholic School in Forest Hills this time will be special. The reason: It is the first year for the school and the first opportunity to share what's been happening the last five months with the parishes that support the school—and the communities East Catholic serves. The theme of this year's national Catholic Schools Week—Jan. 27 to Feb. 2—is "Catholic Schools Raise the Standards." The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh is laying off workers to avoid a $2.3 million deficit for the 2012-13 fiscal year, according to WTAE. Twenty-five full-time positions and eight part-time jobs were eliminated, Bishop David Zubik announced Thursday. A diocesan spokesman said $1 million had been saved by 15 employees who retired, resigned or were reassigned, WTAE reports. Zubik said the decisions weren't easy, but were done with "professionalism, precision and care." "And with the clear understanding that we are first and foremost a church, not a corporation trying to build an attractive bottom line," he said. As part of Catholic Schools Week activities, St. Maurice School is inviting all children ages four and five who are ready to begin kindergarten or first grade in August 2012 for a “Winter Picnic with Frosty Friends" Feb. 3. Pack your blanket, bring your favorite winter stuffed animal and enjoy a winter picnic. Get ready for a winter story time with singing, thinking, playing and some cool winter crafts. Children ages two and a half through five are invited along with a parent or guardian to come to the “Winter Picnic with Frosty Friends Story time” at St. Maurice Cafeteria. Registration is required by calling the St. Maurice School office at 412-351-5403 during school hours (8:30 am until 2:00 pm). The last day for registration is Jan. 30.
