(Read below to find out how to search for yourself or for a relative). However, there are a number of municipalities, school districts, fire and police departments, civic groups, and other organizations that also have money waiting for them. The state website identifies the property as either "under $100" or "over $100" and the source of the property. A quick (and by no means complete) search of the state's …

Battle Begins for 2013 Allegheny County Children’s Choice Awards

Students are asked to read as many titles on the list as possible and to cast their vote on RCsClubhouse.org from March 1 to April 30.

The Allegheny County Library Association and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit will present the third annual Allegheny County Children’s Choice Awards, an initiative to empower students in grades 3-6 to read for fun beyond school requirements. Public and school librarians and teachers from around the county created a list of possible titles based on checkout statistics and “word-of-mouth buzz” by kids, and of these titles, eight were chosen to be put to a kids-only vote. Local participating libraries are C.C. Mellor in Edgewood, Carnegie Free Library of Swissvale, Braddock Carnegie Library and Wilkinsburg Public Library. Students are asked to read as many titles as possible and to cast their vote on the site RCsClubhouse.org from March 1 to …

Winter Blahs? Check Out the Local Library Programs

C.C. Mellor, Swissvale Carnegie and Braddock Carnegie libraries offer a variety of programs.

This kind of weather is great for curling up with an afghan and a book. But sometimes getting out can stave off a case of cabin fever. The three local libraries (and branches) offer a variety of programs, from Clutterers Anonymous meetings and an investment group, to family nights and a Wizard tournament. Check out the winter offerings by clicking on the library link: Have you participated in any local library programs? Are there any ones you would recommend to your neighbors? Tell us in the comments section. _______________________ "Like" Patch on Facebook. | Follow us on Twitter. | Sign up for our daily email newsletter.

Meet the Teacher: Kathy Matesic of Woodland Hills Junior High School

Check out some of the programs this local librarian creates!

Kathy Matesic of Hampton Township is the librarian at Woodland Hills Junior High School in Swissvale. She has been working in the Woodland Hills School District for 13 years as a librarian in various locations. She’s been at Woodland Hills Junior High since the merger. What do you like most about your job? What I like most about my job is working with the students. I have a group here called the “Library Likers”—this year I have a lot of them who help me with shelving books, creating displays and processing. They are my volunteers and they only come during their lunch period or when they have finished all of their classwork. They have to have good grades and behavior and also get a recommendation from a teacher. It’s almost like a job. We …
