Swissvale Borough Council Wednesday approved the 2011 budget at its final meeting before the New Year. The new budget includes a one mill increase in property taxes, totaling 10.1 mills, or $10.10 per $1,000 of a property's value. It is the first time in 12 years the borough has raised taxes. "We pared it down as much as possible," said Borough Council President David Petrarca before the budget went to a vote. Council cited labor contracts, increases in health care costs and continuing necessary public services as reasons for the increase. Swissvale's total budget for the year will rise to $5.8 million, roughly a million dollars up from last year. Hanna Brourman is a junior councilperson at Edgewood Borough
Hanna Brourman is using her experience as a junior councilperson to find new ways to impact both the local community and the global environment. After traveling to Guatemala for a service project this summer and becoming a yearlong junior member of Edgewood Borough Council, Brourman wants to combine her appreciation for local government and her passion for environmental science. "I saw the water there and saw a lake and it was just trashed," Brourman said. "We are so lucky here and I wanted to be able to study that and the effects of pollution and how sick people were there." It's the first snow of winter and Forest Hills Mayor Marty O'Malley is looking at the borough's first car accident caused by slick roads. Police and first responders arrived at the scene immediately with no injuries to report, just a banged-up front bumper and telephone pole. "Those are my guys," O'Malley said, waving to the officers directing traffic around the crunched car across the street. The wreckage was quickly cleared while traffic continued without delay on Ardmore Boulevard.
