Sunday Reflections: Faith and Baseball

A column by the Rev. Dai Morgan.

By the Rev. Dai Morgan The 2013 Major League Baseball season is now in its second full week. The Pirates are off to a losing start. But, not to worry, as of this writing their record is better than it was last year at this time. And remember, last year at the All Star break the Pirates were in first place (we’ll just forget the last ten weeks of the season). So, who knows, maybe this will be a happy year at the ballpark? I’ll be there—many times, this season. In fact, on the day that this blog is released, I intend to be at PNC Park, watching the game. At PNC Park, you’ll notice that along the edge of the balcony-level, that arches around the grandstands, are displayed the names and jersey numbers of star players who have had their numbers…

Sunday Reflections: Faith and Baseball

A column by a local pastor.

By Ben Black, Pastor of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church I sat on my couch October 14, 1992 huddled with my dad as we watched in awe as the Pirates were rushing past the Braves in game seven of the NLCS.  The Pirates seemed destined to be the NL representative in the Fall Classic.  The Pirates had lost some of their firepower from the year before when Bobby Bonilla left in free agency and John Smiley in a trade to the Twins—but none of that mattered as they were three outs away from shutting out the Braves in the final frame of the final game in the series 2-0.  Then it happened. Disaster struck. Doug Drabek toed the rubber to start the ninth after pitching eight beautiful innings of shutout ball. The first batter was Terry Pendleton. …

Sunday Reflections: The Church of Baseball

Some sports are religions in their own right.

By Rebecca Hickok, Pastor of Waverly Presbyterian Church “I believe in the Church of Baseball. I've tried all the major religions, and most of the minor ones. I've worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, trees, mushrooms, and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I heard that, I gave Jesus a chance. But it just didn't work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology. You see, there's no guilt in baseball, and it's never boring." Those are Annie Savoy’s opening words in “Bull Durham” and truer words were never spoken, especially if you happened to be watching Game Six of this year’s World Series …

Regent Square's John Wray Heads to 54th Straight Pirates Opener

This dedicated Pirates fan has attended every Pirates opener since 1958 - and he's always eager to talk baseball.

John Wray is one of Pittsburgh’s most dedicated baseball fans and today, he’ll be at the Pirates home opener—for the 54th consecutive year. Wray was born in Wilkinsburg in 1951 before moving to the Regent Square home he still lives in today at the age of 5. One year later, he attended opening day of the 1958 season at Forbes Field. He hasn’t missed an opener since. “It’s an event for me now,” Wray said. “I get really excited at games. It really makes it a fun occasion.” Wray’s status as a lifelong Pirates fan was cemented in his early teenage years when his older sister became friendly with Roberto Clemente after a chance meeting outside of Forbes Field. Before long, Wray found himself with a future Hall of Fame player in his living room—…
