Junior Baker Creates Desserts & Smiles

This Regent Square boy has a tasty talent.

Will Thayer has the baking skills to satisfy every sweet tooth. Whether it’s a crumbling coffee cake with just the right amount of cinnamon or a pecan pie just like grandma made, when it comes to the kitchen, this 11-year-old is doing it all from scratch. “My great aunt got me into baking because she is a baking fanatic,” he said. “When I was four, we’d always go to my grandma’s house and just bake all of the time.” Thayer of Regent Square is a sixth grader at Falk School in Oakland. His desserts have become a staple at the Waverly Presbyterian Church Holiday Fest auction, where people bid to have their favorite pastries created by the young baker. “That’s really cool because when they buy it, that goes to the church,” he said. “It’s …

Bangladeshi Painter Moves to Regent Square

Zarnigar Chowdhury hopes to make friends through her artwork and crafts

Zarnigar Chowdhury does a little bit of everything. A recent immigrant from Bangladesh, Zarnigar is a prolific creator, painting, creating wax flowers, making candles, sewing floral designs, cooking and baking a variety of scrumptious dishes. Since relocating to Regent Square from the capital city of Dhaka, Bangladesh in September, Chowdhury is eager to share her art and skills in the Pittsburgh area. "I like painting flowers, I love the colors," Chowdhury said. "My style of painting is very different than most. I start out with a color I like and then create the flower out of that and I normally work on three to four canvases at a time."
