Handmade Arcade is Saturday, Dec. 8 in Pittsburgh, and local artists from around the area.
Pittsburgh's first and largest independent art and craft fair returns tomorrow, Dec. 8, to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. The fair, now in its ninth year, will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will feature more than 150 vendors from the Pittsburgh region—including Allison Glancey from Forest Hills—and from around the country. After the opening reception on Friday, the gift shop will be open through Dec. 9 and feature for sale the works of local artist and crafters.
Wilkins School Community Center in Swissvale will open its annual Holiday Gift Shop for business with an opening night party on Friday, Nov. 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. Residents of Swissvale, Edgewood, Regent Square and others are welcome to shop, mingle and be entertained. Those who attend can enjoy sipping wines selected by Chris Forbes, sample homemade goodies, listen to the SteelCity Ukuleles' holiday performance and join in the fun with The Milton Street Carolers. The shop remains open from 12 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday until Dec. 9. More than 40 artists will be featured in seven venues in the East End.
Seven venues and more than 40 artists will be featured on this year’s Art Buzz Tour, set for Dec. 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tour will extend through much of the East End, from Edgewood and Swissvale, down Braddock Avenue and over to Forbes Avenue to Squirrel Hill. New to the tour this year will be the Edgewood Elves, a group of more than 30 artisans who will showcase their work at the Edgewood Club, 1 Pennwood Ave. The Edgewood Club has hosted a holiday sale in the past, but this is the first time it has been a part of the Art Buzz Tour, coordinator Shirley McCormick said. Founder of Wilkins School Community Center has history of bringing people together
Kay Wetzel has spent more than three decades living by the premise that community is important to everyone. Founder of the Wilkins School Community Center, Wetzel, 74, of Swissvale remains board president there, continuing to volunteer at special events, the annual holiday gift shop and several other local organizations. In 1979 when the original elementary school closed at the site, children moved to Dickson Elementary in Swissvale, leaving the building vacant. Wetzel and a group of people in the community wanted to hold onto the space and immediately took action. "I think people need to know each other in the community and care about each other and it seemed like the right thing to do," Wetzel said. Today, the center is home to …
