Tonight's a red carpet night—the time when people around the world wait to see which motion pictures and actors/directors win a coveted Oscar in the 85th Academy Awards. Through the years, a number of films shot on location (or at least in part) in Pittsburgh have received nominations from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in a variety of categories. Tom Hulce had a Golden Globe nod for D&E, but no Academy Award nominations that I know of. That would explain it being not on this particular list.   more ›

Talking Film

Oscar Nominations 'Baffle' Regent Square 'Filmie'

Heidi McDonald offers her initial thoughts on this year's Academy Awards nominees.

I'm thoroughly baffled by these nominations, for a variety of reasons. First, I'm one of the only filmies on the planet that didn't like "Lincoln," and therefore, the fact that it's the most nominated movie this year both makes me question my own taste and decreases my enthusiasm for the process this year. The director snubs were the most glaring for me. Bigelow, natch. Tarantino, I thought, turned in his most important film ever this year (a study of African-American archetypes), and he garnered a Best Picture but not a Best Director. Then ... say what you will about the overwrought nature of "Les Miserables," but I honestly thought (movie, yet unseen) that Tom Hooper would be in there, for shooting a movie musical in a completely new way…

You Be the Critic: Who Do You Think Should Win an Oscar?

Have you seen any of the movies up for Academy Awards? Check out our recap of the nominees and then tell us who you think should win.

Surprisingly, there was no best director nod for Ben Affleck for his critically acclaimed film Argo, which is nominated for seven awards, including Best Picture. The movie will compete alongside Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty in that category. Similar directing shutouts occurred for other highly-praised …

Patch Picks: Dunning's Grill and Oscar's Short Films

Looking for a nice night out this weekend? Grab some comfort food at Dunning's and catch a unique show at Regent Square Theater!

Dunning’s Grill, more than anywhere else for miles, screams home. The restaurant is a quaint, wood-paneled haven, equal parts down-home diner and grandparent’s basement. The bar is a familiar, inviting, everybody-knows-your-name style pub. Places like this are rare, but to find one in the middle of a bustling city street is truly something special. Dunning’s has been a fixture at the corner of South Braddock and Hutchinson avenues in Regent Square for more than 20 years. They have a few specialties, but still manage to have something for everyone – and a full stomach is part of the package. If you’re dining, make sure you get one of the familiar, tastily prepared appetizers, which are large enough to be best if split. Potato skins, fried …
