Carol Congedo Spreads the Love—of Reading

Volunteer Carol Congedo is improving students' reading and writing skills and boosting their confidence.

Twice a week for the past three years, Carol Congedo has been teaching reading and writing skills to students at Schaffer and Wilkins Elementary Schools.

The program is provided by OASIS, an organization dedicated to providing lifelong learning, health, programs and volunteer engagement opportunities for adults over 50.

Congedo provides “high-impact” tutoring for first and third graders, meeting with them for two, half-hour sessions a week.

“We write stories with the kids each week, then we read it to them, then we read it together, and then they read it on their own,” Congedo said. “Meeting twice a week is much more conducive to their learning.”

Now that school has begun, Congedo will meet her next set of students soon. She tutors up to four students per year. The retired physician has lived in Pittsburgh for 40 years. Her children went to school in the and now Congedo is doing her part to educate the next generation.

“I love when the kids' eyes light up when they realize they’ve gotten an idea or understood how groups of words fit together,” Congedo said. “It’s a really wonderful experience.”
