Power Company Ready for Heat Wave; Offers Tips

With temperatures expected to soar to 90 today, Duquesne Light assures customers its being "proactive."

With temperatures forecast to be in 90s today, Duquesne Light Co. is taking proactive measures in preparation for any power interruptions that might occur due to higher electricity usage.

Service crews will be carrying additional transformers while performing routine work, and as a result, will be able to quickly replace failed equipment.

When replacing transformers, crews will be upgrading each to a larger capacity unit that is better suited to manage the higher usage. In addition, crews will be held over for evening and overnight shifts.

To help customers deal with the extremely high temperatures, Duquesne Light offers the following “wise-use” tips:

  • Set air conditioners at 78 degrees or use fans if health permits.
  • If you have window air conditioning units, close off rooms not in use.
  • Make sure all air conditioner filters are clean and in good shape.
  • Turn off non-essential appliances and as many lights as possible.
  • Postpone using major household appliances like clothes dryers, dishwashers and electric stoves until after 7 p.m. These appliances create heat in homes, thereby making air conditioners work harder.
  • Draw blinds, shades or curtains in sunny rooms during the hottest hours of the day to keep out the sun and retain cooler air inside the home.
