Woodland Hills Basketball Team Makes it to Playoffs

For the first time in more than 11 years, the Woodland Hills High School boy's basketball team made it to the playoffs.

In a must-win game last Friday night, Woodland Hills beat rivals Penn Hills 65-49 to qualify for the WPIAL playoffs. This is no small feat; the Wolverines haven't seen a playoff game since 1999.

"We have good coaches and good players," said JV team member Harry Qin.

Coach Mike Decker would agree, praising a tight-knit team of ball players.

"We started out with 26, and now we have the 14 best guys left," Decker said. "They've really gotten into a system; they know how to work together."

Now that hard work has paid off. The Wolverines will gear up for their opening-round game against North Allegheny, this Saturday.

The two teams are familiar with one another, having played together during the off-season. In fact, North Allegheny Head Coach Dave DeGregorio was Decker’s coach at Pine Richland High School.

“They have a similar offensive and defensive strategy,” said Decker. “We’re prepared for them.”

One player said he couldn't wait for this weekend's game.

“I have never played in a game of this importance,” guard Corey Klein said. “I think the atmosphere of the game is going to be really hype.”

A win Saturday would put the Wolverines two victories away from the WPIAL championship; a real possibility for this record-breaking team.
