Woodland Hills Hosts 'The Big Read'

A local high school hosts an event promoting reading.

hosted a video conference panel discussion with students from Santee Education Complex High School in south central Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Held in the high school library, students from both high schools discussed the book, "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston.

This book was selected for students in Allegheny County as this year’s “Big Read in Pittsburgh,” a project of the CCAC One College...One Community initiative.

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with ArtsMidwest.

Students from Woodland Hills English teacher Ms. Margie Rehm's African-American literature classes, as well as students in the reading and writing workshop participated. Books and teaching materials were received through CCAC along with a calendar of events for the project.

During the video conference panel discussion, students from Santee High School and WHHS discussed the book’s narrative and other topics related to the book such as the dialect in which it was written and the impact of the "Blues" in the story.

Ms. Rehm, Mr. Kevin McGuire, WHHS librarian and Mr. Jason Coleman, WHHS technology integration specialist, have been instrumental in organizing the multi-mediaevent.
