Students Honored with Wolverine Spirit Awards

Here are the students who were given the award at the last school board meeting.

Woodland Hills students recently were given the Wolverine Spirit Awards for achievement and positive attitudes.

At February’s legislative board meeting Feb. 9, two students from the Woodland Hills Junior High School were honored. In December at the re-scheduled legislative board meeting, two students from Wilkins Elementary School were honored.

The first junior high student who received the Wolverine Spirit Award was seventh grader Tyrone Scott, nominated by his teacher, Ms. Heidi Balas. She nominated Tyrone because he is “a model student and demonstrates a drive for academic excellence every day. He follows the 'Five P’s of education' -- be prompt, prepared, polite, productive, and proud.”

Eighth grader Alexxis Hamiel was the other junior high student to be honored. She was nominated by her teacher, Ms. Elizabeth McCaskie. McCaskie said Hamiel is “the epitome of a life-long learner. She is conscientious, hard working, attentive, respectful, polite and pleasant. All of Alexxis’ attributes make her a joy to have as a student.”

Fourth grader Emily Parasky of Wilkins Elementary School was nominated by her teacher, Mr. Paul Serbak.

"She never misses a homework assignment and takes school very seriousl," Serbak said. "Through hard work and dedication, Emily has improved her reading grade and continues to make great strides.”

The second student honored from Wilkins was third grader Terry Smith, who was nominated by his teacher, Ms. Sara Rodgers.

“Terry is one of the most polite, helpful children I have ever met," Rodgers said. "He is always willing to lend a hand to me or a peer. Terry tries his best, and is a role model for others."

All of the students were presented with certificates from Superintendent Walter Calinger and their principals. The students also were given gift cards from Borders Book Stores.
