Shaffer Students Win Wolverine Spirit Awards

These local students were awarded this week.

Two students from Shaffer Elementary were the Wolverine Spirit Awardees for December.

At the this past week's school board meeting, kindergartner Briana Toney was presented with the award by Superintendent Walter Calinger and Principal Dr. Deborah Vereen.

Toney was nominated by her teacher, Mary Rooney, because “even as a kindergartner, Briana always completes her work. She follows all of the school rules and works very hard to be the best student she can be.”

The second award winner for the night was sixth grader Sophie Russell, nominated by her teacher Rosanne Simon. She nominated Russell because “she is a conscientious student in and outside of the classroom. She is always working hard and is very respectful and well mannered. She also cares about others and has pride in herself.”

In addition to the award certificates, the students were also given Barnes and Nobles gift cards.  Both students were accompanied by their families at the award ceremony.
