Shaffer Elementary Student Honored by Dok Harris for Food Drive

Vicie Simpson received a great award for organizing a food and tote drive at her school this past December.

During the regular honors assembly at Shaffer Elementary held Monday, —two Penguins tickets personally delivered by Dok Harris.

The drive, which was led and coordinated by the 11-year-old, brought in 39 tote bags and 1,120 items of food. All donations were given to the

Harris, who previously ran for mayor and is the son of famed Steeler Franco Harris, was met with a collective gasp from the students in the crowd. Harris discussed the importance of giving back to the community before giving Simpson her big surprise.

"We have a young lady here who took it upon herself to organize a food drive for those less fortunate," Harris said. "Your leadership is amazing."

Simpson cried as she received the tickets and the students cheered for their peer.
