Shady Side Academy Students Awarded Parkin Fellowships

Congrats to these local students!

Eight Shady Side Academy Senior School students have been named recipients of the Academy's prestigious Parkin Fellowships for the summer of 2012.

Established in 2006 and made possible by the generosity of alumnus Fred Parkin ’59, the Parkin Fellowships award travel grant money to students to engage in service or environmental projects around the globe each summer.

The 2012 Parkin Fellows are:

  • Junior Aya Agha of O’Hara will travel to Mozambique for three weeks to teach English at an orphanage.
  • Junior Taylor Duncan of East Pittsburgh will travel to Panama for two weeks to work at a local orphanage, where she will help nourish malnourished children back to health.
  • Junior Maggie Elias of  will travel to Tanzania for three weeks to work with children and help improve their community.
  • Junior Joseph Klein of  will travel to Romania for one month to work at the Pro Vita Orphanage.
  • Junior Carianne Lee of Wilkinsburg will travel to China for four weeks to teach in a rural school.
  • Sophomore Sophie Wecht of Squirrel Hill will travel to Mexico for two weeks to work with local experts on conservation and environmental projects concerning the protection of turtles, crocodiles and birds.
  • Sophomore Tarah Wright of Stanton Heights will travel to Senegal for one month to complete construction projects, agricultural projects and teaching endeavors.
  • Sophomore Selina Yossef of Poland, OH will travel to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota for two to three weeks to help build homes for the Sioux Indians.

To apply for a Parkin Fellowship, students must be sophomores or juniors in good standing, whose passion is to make a difference in the world through an international service or environmental project.

Fellows are chosen by a selection committee comprised of the academy president, senior school head, and current students who are past Parkin Fellows. 2012 marks the seventh consecutive year that SSA Parkin Fellows have traveled the globe to serve others.
