Local Students Collect Tote Bags at Winchester Thurston

Congrats to these kids for making a difference.

Local students attending Winchester Thurston recently coordinated a food and tote bag drive at the school, in which they made more than 100 bags.

The efforts were coordinated with the which gives recycled bags to those who use the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Asha Irani of Regent Square said she learned that helping people and the environment can be fun and rewarding at the same time. The students made bags out of old T-shirts.

“I really encourage people to try it!” she said. “I decided to get involved with this because I heard about the tote-bag project and loved the idea. Then, I heard from Taylor that we could help fill the tote-bags. I immediately said yes, because who wouldn't want to help the poor and be 'green' all at once?”
The project has inspired Asha to do more volunteer work.

“I learned it can be fun to help out, especially with friends,” Irani said.

Taylor Thomas, another Regent Square students who helped to coordinate efforts, said the project was fun to take part in.

“I thought it was really cool how we were able to use old WT shirts (therefore saving the earth) and at the same time help people who had little or no food,” Thomas said.

Thomas is excited to help the Pittsburgh Food Bank again in the future.
