Edgewood Student Named National Achievement Scholar

This local student is aiming high.

Shady Side Academy senior Jenna Hebert of Edgewood is among approximately 800 outstanding black American high school seniors who were selected to receive National Achievement® Scholarship awards by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

However, since Hebert already won a National Merit $2500 Scholarship, and students may only receive one scholarship from NMSC, she will receive the National Merit Scholarship and was named a National Achievement Scholar in recognition of her achievement in that program. Hebert plans to attend the University of Pennsylvania next year.

Hebert was among more than 160,000 high school juniors who requested consideration in the 2012 National Achievement Scholarship Program when they took the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).Approximately 1,600 high-scoring participants were named semifinalists last fall on a regional representation basis, and 1,300 were chosen as finalists earlier this spring based on academic performance, a recommendation from a school official, SAT scores and an essay. From the finalist pool, 800 National Achievement Scholarship winners were selected. Achievement Scholars are the finalists who were judged to have the strongest record of accomplishments and greatest potential for academic success in college.
