Race for Pace/Paws for Pace Set for Oct. 13 in Churchill

A family fun area will be added this year and preregistration numbers are up.

Preregistration is under way for the 12th annual Race for Pace 5K and Paws for Pace 1-mile fun run/walk on Oct. 13.

The 5K race will begin at 9 a.m. on Greensburg Pike, across from the school, and the 1-mile Paws for Pace portion will start immediately following.

This year’s race will be the kickoff of a two-year capital campaign for to raise money for a new playground.  The Race for Pace is one of the strongest fundraisers for the school and has raised over $500,000 since its start in 2000.

Honorary co-hosts for the event are Mike Clark and Kelly Frey of WTAE-TV. The new family fun area on the school grounds will be open from 8 to 11 a.m. and include face painting, pumpkins, games and activities.

Refreshments will be available and will be donated from Starbucks, Panera Bread, Nancy B’s Cookies, and Eat'n Park. The band Flying Sock Monkeys, which consists of several Pace alumni, will provide the entertainment.

The race generally gets about 700 to 800 participants and 100 dogs each year, but this year’s preregistration numbers are “record-breaking,” according to Kelly Uzzo, marketing communications manager for Pace.

“We’re very excited and are looking forward to the event being bigger and better this year and getting the word out about all of the families and children we help,” said Uzzo.

This year’s top sponsors are Clayton Kendall, who is donating the T-shirts; PNC Bank; and A. Martini & Co. The Churchill, and Wilkins Township police and Woodland Hills EMS staff volunteer their time and services.  Greensburg Pike will be shut down for a few hours that morning.

Online registration is available through Oct. 11 on the Pace website and on-site registration can be done Friday, Oct. 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the school during packet pickup or on race day beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Teams of five or more people and dogs owners can register together and a variety of prizes are awarded in categories, including the top three finishers for each age group, largest team and best dog costume.  Many popular items were donated from local businesses and families and they will be used for door prizes and a silent auction.
