Braddock Hills Students Designing Dream Playground

A local partnership is providing a public playground in Braddock Hills.

Through a partnership between Duquesne Light, Schools and KaBOOM!, a Washington, D.C. based nonprofit, children will soon enjoy a brand new playground open to the public.

Those organizations came together at the Propel Braddock Hills Elementary School Wednesday to host a design day for children. Children from the school put crayon to paper to draw their dream playgrounds, which will ultimately become a reality.

Elements from the children’s drawings will be incorporated into the final design for the new community playground to be built April 27 at the school.

Design day also marked the first meeting of the playground planning committee that will work for the next 10 weeks to plan and prepare for the construction of the new playground.

KaBOOM! has a mission to restore play into children's lives, creating playgrounds that are accessible and located in safe places. Children today spend less time playing outdoors than any previous generation, a fact that is having disastrous consequences on their health, achievement levels, and overall well-being, according to KaBOOM!.

To fight this play deficit, social entrepreneur Darell Hammond founded non-profit KaBOOM! in 1996 in Washington, D.C. with a vision of creating a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. Since then, KaBOOM! has mapped over 89,000 places to play, built more than 2,000 playgrounds, and successfully advocated for play policies in hundreds of cities across the country.
