Wilkinsburg Council to Discuss Future of Police Department

The borough is exploring options to use the City of Pittsburgh police force rather than Wilkinsburg officers.

Wilkinsburg Council is exploring the future option of using the City of Pittsburgh Police Department for local services, and possibly disbanding the Wilkinsburg force, according to council member Tracey Evans.

While council is in the preliminary stages of discussing this issue, an official proposal has been made in coordination with the city.

Wilkinsburg Council’s next meeting is Wednesday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m.

Evans said council will discuss impacts on cost as well as safety of residents over the coming weeks. She also noted that council is making sure they do not rush the process.

If the borough decides to move forward with the plans, public hearings will be held and the proper procedures will be taken, she said.
