Swissvale Council Discusses Vacant Buildings, Lots and Bike Racks

Council met Wednesday for an agenda setting meeting.

Swissvale Council held its agenda setting meeting Wednesday night, discussing issues surrounding vacant buildings, bike racks in Regent Square and other items that will continue to be topics in the immediate future.

During the meeting, council discussed:

  • Vacant buildings in the borough that continue to be secured with padlocks by Fire Chief Clyde Wilhelm and his crews
  • A silent alarm at that already has been set off several times since the beginning of baseball season due to people with keys entering the space without shutting it off, according to Swissvale Police Chief Greg Geppert. Wilhelm made suggestions to rewire the system to prevent false alarms in the future.
  • A vacant lot on Monongahela Avenue owned by the in which an abandoned car is parked and garbage is gathering. Council will discuss ways to shift ownership of the lot, which is meant to be a green space for the time being, to the borough.
  • The code enforcement department reported that 16 citations have been issued so far this month.
  • Recently elected Democratic nominee for council in the primary discussed bike racks coming to the Regent Square business district in front of Typhoon. Rapp said the bike racks will be identical to others in the city depicting the three rivers. As a member of the Regent Square Civic Association, the group spearheading the bike rack installation, Rapp said the goal is to keep bikes in a concentrated area away from trees and poles.

No official action was taken Wednesday. Swissvale Council meets for its regular meeting next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
