Swissvale Council Approves Donations, Hires Three Part-Time Firefighters

Here's a look at last night's Swissvale Council meeting.

Swissvale Borough Council met Wednesday night for its regular meeting, where a few action items were presented.

During the meeting, council approved:

  • A $4,000 contribution to the Swissvale Meals on Wheels as its annual donation.
  • A $500 contribution to the Swissvale Library as its regular annual contribution.
  • The appointment of Veryl Lawson to the planning commission for a four-year term.
  • The advertisement of a hearing regarding the demolition of buildings at 7311 Denniston St. and 1714 Hays St. The hearing is set for April 6.
  • The hiring of three part-time firefighters for the borough. Paul Shiring, James Barca and Chris Cerci all were approved for their new positions, which will help in alleviating overtime costs in the fire department.

In other news, council discussed the need for residents to clean up after their dogs as they walk along the streets in the borough. Residents complained that recently it had become a visible problem on several sidewalks, roads and yards.

Council also discussed the upcoming Clean Up Day in Swissvale, which is scheduled for May 14.
