Solobay: Anti-Dog Fighting Laws Need Strengthened

Solobay's comments come after a suspected dog ring was busted last week.

 was on scene Friday when authorities siezed 14 animals from a suspected dog-fighting ring in Wilkinsburg—and said that state laws on the matter need to be stregthened.

"Although we have some good anti-dog fighting laws in Pennsylvania, there is some additional strengthen that needs to be done to laws," Solobay, D-Canonsburg, said.

He said that protections specifically need to be added for whistleblowers.

"Often times the actors in this illegal activity can be very intimidating and once witnesses are identified they feel as if there is no protection for them from the accused," Solobay said.

WTAE reported that police raided a Wilkinsburg home Friday night where they found dogs badly injured and caged in the basement.

The report stated that eight dogs were found in the basement while others were chained in the backyard on Bessica Street.

The Humane Society was on the scene to give the dogs medical evaluations and help them as they were taken from the home.
